I personally haven't been to the movies in years, but a few of this year's Golden Globe nominations strike an interest. With movies priced at $10 in NYC, I was wondering if anyone felt like recommending a "must see" before the Academy Award nominations arrive.

The only "must sees" I have heard about from friends is "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Shrek". A few thought "Moulin Rouge" was worth seeing.

Any others "worth" a $10 look?

I definately recommend LOTR "The Fellowship of the Rings." I've heard that "A Beautiful Mind" is also not to be missed.

Thanks LDF! Those are my top two selections. Just wondering though if "Rings" would be as effective to those who are not familiar with the books (like me!).

It definately tells the story in a way that you don't need to know the story. One reference is made to The Hobbit, but that's about it. I definately recommend reading the books (you can probably get them cheaper than the movie at a used book store), but you can see the movie first if you are so inclined.

We Finally Saw Amelie

And I wuz bored Silly

I think I'll give the Royal Tannenbaums a Go

.

Beautiful Mind was superb. The Royal Tennenbaums was disappointing.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND was great once it got started - i had difficulty staying focused during the first 45 min or so - but it tells a wonderful story and i enjoyed crowe's portrayal of john nash

BLACK HAWK DOWN was very good - high action (not usually my cup of tea) and very enlightening re: the somalia invasion in 93 - i learned more than i expected - discovery channel presently showing their version of the confrontation - the discovery channel presentation is interesting b/c it gives a slightly clearer understanding of what transpired afterward

i always go to matinees at the theater and the tickets are $7.25 - but i would have been comfortable had i paid $10 to see either of them

LOTR was surprisingly good. I was ready to hate it, having loved the books as a child, but now I can't wait for the DVD to come out so I can see the other 90 mins. or so they cut....

Moulin Rouge was unwatchable ... unless you're a 13-yr-old Ritalin-doped MTV junkie. The directorial vision was trying so hard to be avant-pop that it was just downright laughable.

Hmmm Movies..

I personally enjoy the older ones, black and white, Audry Hepburn kind, but I did enjoy Lord of the Rings. Thats the latest one I saw. I'm looking forward for The Matrix 2 to come out and theres a movie I want to see.. its got whats-his-name in it and its about that thing that he does, and he goes to that place. You know what I'm talking about.

:D :D Jenny?? Whatcha counting down to?? just curious. :D :D

You must see "A Beautiful Mind". I cannot describe the emotions that presented themselves while watching this movie. My mind has never been catapulted quite like this before, and I still have not gotten over what I was watching. It was a most passionate movie.

When this movie was over, I couldn't get up from my seat because I was emotionally drained - I just couldn't move a muscle. It left me unable to speak about it for quite some time, also.

Making my own list!

Thanks all for your reviews and recommendations.

I definitely want to see LOTR on the BIG SCREEN.

I just adore Ron Howard's direction, and from the HBO "Making of A Beautiful Mind" last night, it looks like much more than I expected it to be from the original trailers. Enchanted: I love having any kind of strong reaction from a film, and your description makes me even more eager to see this!

Lady Violet: I spend a lot of time watching AMC and TCM stations for the black and whites! "All About Eve" and "Psycho" are my all-time faves.

BTW, my countdown is for my face-to-face meeting with Omahaman2 when he visits NYC and ME!! We met at Syd's hot tub in chat, and we have already become part of each other's lives.

Another friend brought up the film that Denzel Washington was nominated for at the Golden Globes (was it "The Training"?). Has anyone seen this?
