South African anti-rape condom aims to stop attacks
02 September 2005

KLEINMOND: A South African inventor has unveiled a new anti-rape female condom that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

"Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time," Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex", a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.

Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

"He will obviously be too pre-occupied at this stage," she told reporters in Kleinmond, a small holiday village about 100km east of Cape Town. "I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital."

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.

It also reduces the chances of a woman falling pregnant or contracting Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases from the attacker by acting in the same way as a female condom.

South Africa has more people with HIV/Aids than any other country, with one in nine of its 45 million population infected.

Ehlers, who showed off a prototype yesterday, said women had tried it for comfort and it had been tested on a plastic male model but not yet on a live man. Production was planned to start next year.

But the "rapex" has raised fears amongst anti-rape activists that it could escalate violence against women.

"If a victim is wearing such a device it may enrage the attacker further and possibly result in more harm being caused," said Sam Waterhouse, advocacy co-ordinator for Rape Crisis.

Other critics say the condom is mediaeval and barbaric – an accusation Ehlers says should be directed rather at the act of rape.

"This is not about vengeance ... but the deed, that is what I hate," she said.

Somehow I don't see the FDA or the ACLU ever approving this. Too many people in high positions may get busted.

I can't see the ACLU getting involved unless it went to court. In which case I'd have to say her constitutional rights to insert whatever she damn well pleases into her body would trump any others.

The FDA is another matter. But then, I also don't see how they would be involved, really. It's sure as hell not a food nor drug.

I read this article a few days ago and was struck by this line.

Other critics say the condom is mediaeval and barbaric...

The condom is barbaric? And I suppose rape isn't? Must have been a male that said it. Sometimes I'm embarassed by my gender.

Hmm. I wonder how many rapists a device like that would instead turn into murderers. Unless it also shoots lethal poison darts into the wiener, it might only make an already violent man even more violent.

Harsh and sad, but true, I fear.

I'm curious.

Is it hidden? Because the female condom is easily seen.

And if the rapiest notices it, I imagine he'll just remove it.

Forcefully.

But personally, I love the idea.

Especially about the barbs.

No, it's not actually a condom- as I understand it, it's more like a tampon. It sits within, waiting for the moment to strike. Your very own, personal Moray eel! :D

In the book "Snow Crash" (Neil Stephenson) a young girl wears a "dentata"- a devise which shoots an injection of narcotics right into the big vein in an attacker's penis. You have to remember to take it out, in the heat of the moment!

I like it, but I would modify it so instead it injected something like the venom from the Stone Fish or the Brown Recluse. (Actually a mix of the two would be better, but then again I've often been told I'm evil.)

point i don't get

i don't think many women will wear it all the time in anticipation of being raped, I mean really, we can be preety silly about basic protection sometimes, if we thought we would get raped at any given moment and wanted to be prepared wouldn't we just walk aroung with a riffle?
my 2 cents anyway

You live in America, sweets. There are parts of Africa where the AIDS rate is higher among women than men- because the men think that sex with a virgin will cure them.
And, you live in a place where a raped woman isn't stoned to death for her crime of being the victim.
I would wear it. With Seacat's improvements.

how about something that temporarily paralizes the man from the waiste down and makes his penis go limp (with lasting effects on that organ)

Me too.

I think they are on to something...

Geez, you people are sadistic! I thought a condom that stuck a bunch of barbs in your dick and has to be removed surgically would be sufficent punishment.

I still think there would be some harm done to the user... what if it accidently goes off inside of a women.

could you get toxic shock... I think rape is a ugly violent thing but, I don't know about this!

I think we will hear more of this being used on abusive hubands and BF.

You want to paralyze his arms, too, so he can't kill you with his fists.

if these become popular, aren't rapists going to start checking for them first, then venting even more anger on the victim?

personally, i'd be happy if they injected a neurotoxin as well, although i can't imagine a way to make that safe for the wearer.

IF his legs don't work, you should be abe to escape in most cases.

Not to mention the guy should be mighty shocked when his dick goes limp and his feet fall out from under him.

I think it's a good idea that just needs some work.

women should be more protected from rape.

yeah, there will always be the argument that anything you do to try to stop him will only enrage him, but should we cower in fear and just lay down because of that? It's not always best to do the 'safe' thing IMO. Especially with AIDS and other STD's out there.

And I think they should stop calling it a condom and just call it an anti-rape device or something.

Sweet,

While I like the idea behind this devise there is already a defense out there against rape. It is knowing someone like me.

My views on rape and the punishment for it are widely known on this forum. I am considered by some to be sadistic, violent, and barbaric. (Guilty as charged.) That being said, and the feelings of too many people not withstanding, I will still gladly pull a rapist off his victim with a firm grip on his genitalia and make him pay, before his victim, in a way he would never have considered possible.

Cat

That's cool. Maybe they could invent one that would tighten around the rapist's penis and make it drop off!

well, we can't all carry a seacat around with us...

That being said, 'seacat' might make a good name for the 'evil' device in question.
