Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R) explaining his fierce opposition to the policy.

“I don’t think that just because your birthday comes around, that you ought to be registered to vote.” He then listed a litany of voting rights advocates – including Rep. John Lewis, Martin Luther King, and Rosa Parks – and declared:

“These people fought – some of them were beaten, some of them were killed – because of their desire to ensure that everybody that wanted to had the right to register to vote and participate in the process. I’m not going to cheapen the work that they did. I’m not going to embarrass them by allowing somebody that’s too sorry to get up off of their rear end to go register to vote … because they think they deserve the right because they’ve turned 18.”


“nder the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution, turning 18 does, indeed, give an American citizen the right to vote. So Merrill’s statement that ‘just because you turned 18 doesn’t give you the right to do anything’ is not only contradictory to basic values of citizenship and democratic engagement in America. It’s also just plain wrong.”

Finally, Merrill specifically mentioned Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a civil rights pioneer, as a reason not to adopt AVR. The problem with this is, John Lewis is still around and we can ask him if agrees. In fact, we don’t have to ask: Lewis has already said he loves automatic voter registration and wants more states to adopt it.

Ummm, yes. An American citizen of legal age has the right to vote. Pretty much was all that was required for me to vote the 1st time.

Laughter is often the last resort of those with severely limited capacity when faced with something they can't possibly understand. You've demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge regarding the Constitution.

The founders built in the ability to modify the constitution, and even replace it completely should the citizens decide to, for good reason. They were smart enough to know that they couldn't possibly anticipate everything that should be included and so left it open for modification as times and the will of the people changed.

Unfortunately for you, and fortunately for the rest of us, your will does not reflect that of the majority of U.S. Citizens. You're a vestigial organ being removed from the body politic through natural selection.
