Another problem for Jedi Outcast

Okay.....perhaps you can help. My boyfriend the self-proclaimed computer God (he almost has a computing degree) has no idea what the problem is. Okay, my bf wiped my hd a couple of months ago and added more RAM. He the partitioned the hd so I could run both Windows 98 and Windows XP Professional. Normally I use XP. Anyways, everything in general is working fine it just takes forever before my computer will allow me to connect to the internet. I can open up all the other programs on my computer but it won't let open the box to connect to the internet for at least a few minutes after the computer has booted up. I have DSL (Bell Sympatico if that helps). Everything is working fine...I'm just sick and tired of waiting around to connect to the internet.

is your DSL connection through the USB port or a network card? what is the model of the DSL modem?

totally unrelated question:
why did he set it up to dual boot between winXP and 98?

DSL connection is through a network card and as far as I can tell the modem is an Alcatel.....I don't know much than that....I just use whatever Bell gave me. As for partitioning the drive, a lot of programs don't work under XP (including a few a have) and a couple actually crash XP. Other than that, he's the computer God....ask him. He's done the same thing to his computer, and seems to think it's a good idea.

Norton anti virus takes forever to load when I boot up - during which time I can open most anything except my Sympatico.

Maybe the bf is right....It's just Sympatico....Not my computer....He hates Sympatico...Loves Rogers.....So when he said he had no clue, but that it was probably Sympatico, he was right. Darn it....

Okay.....I have Bell Sympatico High Speed DSL...My boyfriend has Rogers Cable internet. He's always telling me how much better Rogers is and how awful Sympatico is (after one bad experience setting it up where he works). I'm getting sick of hearing him tell me how much slower DSL is than cable, blah blah...I said "Darn it!" because if it's just Sympatico that's slowing things down then he's right....and I don't want him to be right....Make sense?

aha! it makes sense now. You might be running something called PPPoE, that will slow you down as it tries to authenticate to your ISPs servers. Cable doesn't have that.

Yes, mine now runs PPoE and that's when it started doing this. Needssome I have not heard great things about Rogers cable internet either though - it goes down much more often then Bell.

Yeah....I've heard about Rogers going down too....My bf just says it's A LOT faster which is why he likes it better. Oh well, it's more expensive and I don't have cable for my tv why should my computer get it!
