I just received a PM from someone very well known here that informed me she is leaving Lit because of a troll that has been very diligent in hurting her. She asked to not be revealed, and
has removed her pic thread and other links.

This is so sad. She is a loving, giving, beautiful woman that has never said a cross word to a soul, and she will be sorely missed.
I begged you by PM, and I am pleading with you here...take a break, but please don't leave us entirely?

I'm so damn tired of this silliness. Its like a feeding frenzy here. This is supposed to be entertainment and enjoyment for adults...adults.
Its is so sad to see someone that gives so much to us be pushed out like she is nothing, by someone that IS cruel and uncaring. Eventually, this site will be taken over by these trolls and unregistered's who do nothing at all to contribute.


And before you start on me, I have done my best to straighten out my mess, and I would greatly appreciate this thread remaining what it is, and not being turned into yet another pointless fight, please?


I don't know what I'm asking for here, not much you can say, I guess I'm just rambling....but I hope she sees this and realizes how important she is...not just to me, but to so many of you.

While I agree with what has been said, I can feel sympathy for the lady, who ever she is. A thread I used to enjoy has recently become the lair of someone who takes pleasure in taunting and insulting me. For personal reasons I have chosen to rein in my acid wit. But even if I hadn't, it becomes to noxious to do constant battle where I would prefer to play. I unsubscribed from that thread. Were the same thing to happen in many places, I might leave as well.

I'm not upset.

Whomever left did so of her own free will. She was not forced to leave, she decided to do so on her own. She can blame the trolls all she likes, the simple fact is that they have no power over her that she does not grant them. So she gave them the power to hurt her, she gave them the power to drive her off, she is ultimately responsible for her own leaving.

There's no way around it. We are each responsible for our own behavior.

It's not possible to be completely immune to trolls, but it is possible to move on. A lot of people do so on a regular basis. If she is not capable of doing so, that's fine. She should go and do whatever is best for her.

But I won't be upset because she allowed herself to be driven off by trolls. It's sad when people leave, but that's her choice to make. I'm not upset, I'm accepting.

I agree completely, but so many things run through your mind when its happening to you. You begin to feel embarassed, hurt, you wonder why, and you begin to feel you are no longer welcome. Sometimes its easier when they have just worn you down so much.
Its also WAY too easy to sit behind a computer screen in anonymity and fire your little shots....

The bottom line for me is that when you don't care for someone, just pay them no attention...just because this is a public forum in which anyone can say anything they feel like saying, doesn't mean we should act like heartless, evil somethinganothers, fresh off the grade school playground.
It seems to me that a troll constantly harassing someone says more for the someone they are harassing than it does for the troll...why are they giving them so much attention? Hmm....

I think not, though I can see why you'd raise the issue. The site is the product of those who post, just as a playground or a neighborhood or any other community is the sum of the actions of those in it. Those who fall prey to mean-spirited hounding lessen us when they leave, not because we necessarily know them well, if at all, but because their departure can be construed by the troll as a validation for that behavior. The behaviors which are validated tend to be re-used, the trolls are not generally terribly creative or inspired, they are just communicating in a way that life has suggested is effective.

The underlying problem is that what they are effective at is seldom consonant with the goals of the majority, not to mention that they do not generally seem to have examined their own goals and motivations let alone exhibit likelihood of doing so. They are nearly-unthinking predators, caught in an action/reaction dynamic.

Sometimes the hoods take over the hood, sometimes the will of those present sends them running. It is a constant struggle in any community, only the means change.
