So I've heard Hawks (I'm using this non-derrogatory, btw) respond to the question, "Where is the evidence" with "The Kurds were slaughtered by Saddam!" many, many times.

So, it comes really interesting when the Kurds say they fear the US even positioning troops in Turkey as they say it's a bigger threat to them than Saddam?

Sigh... another country on the tour of terrer.

A very large problem after the Saddam is eliminated in whatever way, is the Kurdish situation. A number of the Kurds in Northern Iraq are from Turkey, and their leadership wants their own country/state. The problem is that the area they want for a country includes part of Turkey, Northern Iraq, and Northern Iran.

That is why the U.S. better have a real plan for what happens afterwards, or else we could have one huge mess.:(

FYI. I favor removing Saddam from power, I just think that we better have a plan in place for after he is gone.

i read somewhere that there are three factions in Iraq.

none of the three, want to see one of the others in power.

all the bad shit saddam does and has done, it can be said he at least keeps these factions appart.

truegentleman: I could not agree more

The kurds are the largest ethnic group besides the gypsies that do not have a state of their own.

It is going to be a big problem.

Have we seen anything to indicate that they have one?

Does anybody think they have any reasonable plan for them?

yup, they have a great plan....

bomb the crap out of them till they can put in a puppet government that no parties will accept.... oh wait... thats been done before.

Since i was already in the Blackadder mood....

Bob Parkhurst: I want to see how a war is fought, so badly.
Captain Edmund Blackadder: Well, you've come to the right place, Bob. A war hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, high chief of all the vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside.

There are three factions.

1) The Sunni Muslims, who control the government now under Saddam, and make up around 30% of the population

2) The Shi'a Muslims, who are mainly in the Southern part of Iraq, and are allied with Iran to some extent, since Iran is 90%+ Shi'a. But the problem with that is that most of the Shi'a Muslims in Iraq are Arab, while the Shi'a in Iran are Persian. A slight difference to us, but a potential big difference to them.

3) Then you have the Kurds.

Yeah. Well, what if the plan is that this is the justification for us to remain until democracy works? Somehow I have the feeling that partition ( been done in WWII- still have troops in those places, except Viet Nam) & a popularly elected Islamic theocracy are the reasons there was no consensus for regime change the last war.
