OKLAHOMA CITY -- An executive committee member of the Southern Baptist Convention was arrested on a lewdness charge for propositioning a plainclothes policeman outside a hotel, police said.

Lonnie Latham, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was booked into Oklahoma County Jail Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of offering to engage in an act of lewdness, police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. Latham was released on $500 bail Wednesday afternoon.

Latham, who has spoken out against homosexuality, asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham was arrested and his 2005 Mercedes automobile was impounded, Becker said.

Calls to Latham at his church were not immediately returned Wednesday.

When he left jail, he said:

"I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police."

The arrest took place in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, which is in an area where the public has complained about male prostitutes flagging down cars, Becker said. The plainclothes officers was investigating these complaints.

The lewdness charge carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Latham is one of four Southern Baptist Convention executive committee members from Oklahoma.

He spoke out last year against a measure, ultimately approved by voters, to expand tribal gaming.

He has also spoken out against same-sex marriage and in support of a Southern Baptist Convention directive urging its 42,000 churches to befriend gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle."'

The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

LOL mega boo yaa LOL

Not just that the church goes against gays and lesbians , but they also think they can reprogram them ?

And the priest asks the policeman if he wants to go in and have oral sex ? and he is a against gays ? it is not just hypocritical, but the person has mega big double standards ? LOL it is funny as hell.

Heck, I am glad that I am bi lol, this is funny :)

But hey what the hell, that made me smile :)

And yes I know it offends some Christian people that I laugh my arse off at double standards, but heck, at least I know it is double morale standards ;)

Morale is good, double morale (the Danish word for double standards)
must be double good then lol :)

It's not hypocritical to be unable to meet one's moral standards. It would only be hypocritical if he believes it is alright for him to engage in gay sex, but not for other people. If he believes gay sex is wrong, yet engages in gay sex, it reflects a human weakness and inability to live up to his own standard, not hypocrisy. (Assuming, of course, that he recognizes that he conduct violated his own moral code.) I'd say most people agree that it's wrong to lie (without a sufficient justification), but most of us would admit that we've done it before. Don't confuse weakness for hypocrisy.

In my view, what elevates it from weakness to hypocrisy is the participation in a public campaign of vilification against people for the same "sins" he commits himself.

Dietcherry...

That's a good point.

I do think it's funny though. I'm a Christian bi-sexual. We all have weaknesses, but I think if this is who I am, well....And I try not to judge anyone, but what the hell was that pastor thinking???

southern baptists really annoy the hell out of me. i was raised catholic, and an ex-girlfriend informed me they see catholics as a cult (huh?)

that isn't exatcly hypocrisy, but its close. its like what was said earlier, its simply a sign of human weakness. however, i have a feeling that this was not the first time he tried to hook up with a guy for a blowjob. the hypocrisy is in the repitition. committing the act, feeling guilty about it, preaching out against it, and then repeating.

what was it that Saint Augustine said? "Lord, give me the strength to resist temptaion, but not just yet"

(Augustine was a fan of the ladies)

Wait, it's illegal to ask someone for oral sex? I find this much worse than hypocrisy.

i think when it is a total stranger outside of a hotel

Weaknesses or not, it's still hypocrisy. And Latham being of the worst type. To me they're not only hypocrites, but also cowards. It's amazing how these guys time and time again, keep hanging themselves with their own "Christian" rope. I can't help but to think of all those TV evangelists (Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker etc.) have sort of created a comedic stereotype of themselves with their "I am weak and I have sinned" bullshit whilst fleecing their followers. Latham and company definitely don't "practice what they preach!"

Since when are blow jobs illegal?

Clinton was charged with pergury, not for spilling cum on Monica's chin.

It's called sodomy and it's been illegal for quite some time. Just because he wasn't charged doesn't mean there wasn't a crime committed.

Ms Flirt, how many states still have sodomy laws on the books?

PS....I don't know, I'm asking.

Naw, see, you're gettin' him all wrong. He simply invited the gentleman up to his hotel for a blowjob so that he would then have a captive audience in order to show him the error of his ways.

Yeah, that's it. *nods*

Father I have sinned again like last time, I had a bisexual encounter.

I blowed my male partner agian, and again.

the priest wonders what a blowjob is, and asks mother superior "dear mother superior, what is a blowjob ?"

Mother superior says "20 $" just like in town, where you were asked .

Sorry for my humourous comment, but why confess, that you have "sinned" again, and again that you have been doing some bisexual stuff , when you should rather just enjoy the experience ?

Sorry if I offend you, but it puzzles me .

Heck, I am maybe a member of the stateowned church in Denmark, and I believe in God, but I am not a Christian at all.

I don´t get it.

Please explain me why, but don´t take offence of the joke, put into my comment.

Since I can only see, some double standards, in confessing again, and again you have had bisexual encounters.

Anyway, please explain it , since it puzzles me.

I believe in this particular incident he was charged with solicitation, not sodomy.

I'm not sure what makes it different from two gay guys going home together after a night at the bar, though. They are certainly propositioning each other for sex. I guess perhaps there was money involved, and that is solicitation.
