I recently ran across an article about modern song lyrics reimagined as sonnets. You can read the article here:
https://lithub.com/all-your-favorite-pop-songs-reimagined-as-sonnets/

This seems like a great challenge idea to me. Pick a song you like and turn the lyric into a sonnet (or any form or free verse you choose...I like to be inclusive!). Just be sure to rewrite, not copy, the lyric. Note the form and song you've chosen.

This is an informal challenge so there's no end date; it's just a fun exercise to try out. And, again, any form or free verse is fine. I ain't judgey!

I'll try to post one soon. It's hard for me to get on and post since the update, but I'm here daily sweeping up metaphors and refilling those lube dispensers. Ahem.

Happy poeming! ❤️

One Dich (without you) Rammstein (oh my goth)

I left my love among the evergreen
Beneath the pines she comes and goes no more
Where once our little lives played out before
Is silence as the world has never seen
The shroud of evening creeps along the ground
Benighted for my heart is dead to me
Leave all we were and all that we could be
Where not a sparrow makes a single sound
The time that I have left is worthless woe
Why count the hours there's nothing left to do
These worthless seconds freezing me to death
Too cold and dark for anything to grow
There's nothing left to keep me without you
These worthless seconds smother my last breath

I Wanna Hold Your Hand

It is but a small quest my dearest love,
Others might say it's no meaningful thing.
I give only words: I haven't a ring
My sweet, but first you must take off your glove.
When we hold hands and our fingers entwine
I feel that the world surrounds me with joy,
You understand that I must be your boy,
And I am convinced that you can be mine.
When I dream of you I shiver and sigh,
My thoughts center on us two all alone
Do you understand that this makes me moan?
Even touching fingertips makes me high!

It's a simple story but understand:
It's just beginning when I hold your hand.

This is excellent. Well done!

Mine is lousy but it's the first song that popped into my head. Beatlemaniac 4ever lol

Hello

Greetings, am I the gentleman you seek?
May I start by saying I adore you?
and. in truth, I vow to ever be true
I long to know the art of tlhy mystique.
Thou art in my mind when I am alone,
In dreams, we’ve kissed a thousand times or more.
Betimes I see you walking past my door.
Pray tell me how I may make you my own.
I ponder where thou art and what thou dost,
Art thou alone and in need of my love?
I’m here and waiting for my turtle dove,
On bended knee, I beg thee for thy trust.
I want you enfolded in a lace wrap.
Another suitor seeks your hand, alas.
I swear my heart is fragile as cut glass
Am I the one thou lookest for, mayhap

Not a sonnet. but a couple verses I've adapted from Saint Leonard's "Take this Waltz" which was adapted from Lorca's poem, "Pequeño vals vienés" (Little Viennese Waltz).

Take this war

There’s a theatre hall in Mariupol,
Where women and children had fled
But the Russians bomb without conscience
A number unknown, now are dead
As the corpses were pulled from the rubble
The earth was awash with our tears.

Aye, aye, aye, aye
Take this war, take this war,
Take this war put a clamp on its jaws

On the outskirts of Kiev, a tank’s burning
Soldier’s lives from both sides are lost
Dark dreams of a malevolent madman
pursued regardless of cost.
While safe far away, the oligarchs play
And grumble at loss of their yachts.

Aye, aye, aye, aye
Save this tree where doves go to die
Ukraine won’t forget you, you know.

Stairway to Heaven

I know my lady knows
I see her glitter in the brook
A tree standing on the bank where we met
A day in summer with the wind blowing
A piper in the distance calling us upward and away
The white light casting shadows, drawing us
Calling us on a whistling wind

I know my lady knows
She waits for me at the top of the stairs
My spirit crying
Echoing through the forest
Two paths behind me and hedgerow all around
A new day dawns.
Heaven awaits.

Sweet child of mine

Would that I could behold her everyday
The waking hours would ever be so sweet
For summer skies and quiet do I pray
Both for my love and I as our eyes meet
The man I was could never understand
How lost his heart could be in baby's eyes
A twist of flossy treasure in his hand
A blade to cut his heart each time she cries
Can I confess the beauty of her face
That you might see her as a thing divine
And know on earth there is no better place
Than in the arms of this sweet child of mine
Damn all the plans I made to leave you how
Can I leave her? Where do we go now?

This one's for the ladies…

In spite of what th' crass lotharios say
It doesn't suite to bruise the fruit too much
It's best to judge the lady on the day
And woo her first with smoochiwoos and such

There may be times a piston pace is neat
There may be times her peaches need a squeeze
But oftentimes a gentler pace is sweet
That is if what you're aiming is to please

Love's language is to ball and yet be soft
Love's language is to hump and be discreet
Love's language is to swing the chub aloft
But slow the pace when peach and cudgel meet

Sweet nothings from the poet and the bard
Until it be the time to fuck her hard…

Zeit
(Who knows? Not a sonnet)

Fate commands us fate denies us
Though our eyes be dark we see
Shadows cast from life to death thus
Youth succumbs to misery
Drifting down the river flowing
Future fated as a rhyme
Washed away now we are going
Caught up in the hands of time

I begged it to wait but there was no way
Time
The moment is past it ended so fast
Time
I treasure the end I loved you my friend
Time

No-one can hope to survive
All bodies cool all houses fall
In your arms I was alive
In just a breath I lost it all
Wait until my love surrounds you
Stop the clock and take a step
There's no mercy when you call to
Beg for one more second yet

Time
I've waited so long for where I belong
Time
Do you feel it too I'm waiting for you
Time
I needed to fall it's so beautiful

Untitled (Spenserian sonnet)

sorry, forgot it's supposed to be based on lyrics

The days of rising with the dawn to quench the lawn,
To drench the yard and keep it fresh, routinely green
That left me bushed, too sapped to even yawn
Are gone, the wastage of clean water was obscene.
Rocks replace the thirsty sod, absolving me of my routine
Variety of rocks in size and shape wards off monotony
And precise placement keeps the lineament clean.
Ample beds of flowers welcome butterfly and bee,
No messy grass in clipping form and no debris.
Passing strollers stop to view our yard,
Our banks of flowering shrubs and shady tree
And comment on how we have labored hard
But all we do for work is pull out any weeds
And in the springtime scatter sundry seeds.

Let Me Tell You Why

These are the unthought contents of my head
that somehow spilled as words upon a page
Yesterday, I couldn't believe today would age
my ideology as if those ideas had ever fed
You all the tears, all the hopeless tears we shed
because you fear the reasons and to tell me why
I should feel this way just because you sit and cry
How, somehow this morning's different and why you dread
waking me from happy fantasy here in my bed
rolled up in coccoon linens and silken sheets
and murmured protests and rhymes a drum beats
here where the dreams are dreamt instead
of reading books that should not be read
because those words will always tell you why.

Once I had a dream

Had it all worked out last night, you know
Woke up this morning, it had lost it’s glow
Inspiration, perspiration, shine don’t show
Fast track’s fast, but change comes so slow
Ain’t going nowhere, cause no place to go
Caught a dhow to China, but the wind no blow
Planted trees to catch carbon but trees don’t grow
Banks taking back the house cause it’s in escrow
Clouds up high but seems there’s only shite below
That ninety-nine percent done taken all the dough
Once I had a dream but had to let it go

This came about when imy google of "Why" lyrics, NF's song came up before Annie Lenox's. Definitely not a sonnet.
