Okay you formal poetry fanatics. Here is a challenge. Come one --- Come all. Share the fun. I was out looking for a website for Juno to show her the masochistic method associated with Sestinas of which Angeline is so fond. I have not found anyone that has talked about the this form of poem yet, so my challenge? Write one! Will I? Hell no! Okay, maybe I will.

Rubáiyát

Oh boy. JUDO oughta be able knock one of these babies outta out in about 7 minutes, lol. And she'll make it a backwards, sideways triple acrostic, too. You don't know--she's one scary girl.

Isn't that right, JUDO my love? Get your jingle bells in this thread and do it, baby. :p

The particulars are here.

Hey, I checked out that rubáiyát thingy.

it didn't seem too hard at all. Not at alllike the repeating line terror of a whatevernelle or content control of some other excersises I've seen here.

It's just about rhyming. And I can rhyme til the cows come home. :)

I know. Sucks....

Lol. We're getting each other in trouble. She'll be in here later to mop up the floor with us. :D Wait and see. And shhhh.

You can't see it until the Solstice. My 15 minute rubáiyát fits in nicely with that challenge.

Maybe I should add that that goes pretty fast, since I don't deal in livestock anymore.

And the Champ is combining challenges. How cocky is that? ;)

There is one thing slightly wrong in that site (I have been researching this form for ages). A rubaï (each of the quatrains) should be able to stand on its own, like a short poem, even when it's integrated on an interlocked rubaïyat.

It's the same logic of the ghazal, which makes sense, seeing both forms come from the same culture.

The Vizier's Treasure

(an interlocked rubaiyat)

As golden orb doth flee and enter night
With stars to haunt the sands that fall glass height.
A rider pounds the dunes with focused mind
Before the last small grain condemns the light.

A bet befell that one who's so refined
Could ride to Mersin be they so inclined
And back again same day to claim the dream
To take the Vizier's treasure, naught to bind.

Six horses flew on wings of rushing steam,
But as the light fell weak on its last beam,
Not boots, but skirts came running stairs' last flight
To claim her prize -- the Vizier's daughter's cream.

Written Departure

(a rubailocked interyat, or sumpfing)

Long years gone now since I told my tale,
and wandered down that windy sandy trail
to Nevermore, and never to arrive.
One prayer is left; to see my words prevail.

I once was yours in person, warm, alive.
I too did blossom, saw your essence thrive.
But pararalysed by paradise I fell.
My bliss became my struggle to survive.

Your loving close embrace became my cell.
Your kiss became a rosy path to hell.
I fled your love, before my bones turned frail,
and wrote my story down, my stained farewell.

told ya, I fart rhymes ;-)

Though I'll admit, JUDO ownz us all... wow

I had to try :(

Cinderella's dance

Tiny firecrackers of laughter filled the room,
chasing cobwebs, skirting away gloom.
Sparklers lit a thousand inside her eyes,
and joy danced as golden dust with her broom

Fractured rainbows on windows glittered outside,
the sun feeling pauper begged to be let inside.
Trapped and seduced, silent on silent,
Cinderella never before showed such a glowing bride.

Caught in emotion, she laughed at her dance,
dusting, waltzing, scrubbing, she pranced,
spearing all with thoughts of paradise
sighing softly, grandly raising her lance!

Rubáiyát

Being new to this forum I'll give it a shot. Any theme? Specific words?

The newbies Shot

I am new here and have not wriotten in this style so please be kind.

The Affair

Through the open window the breeze blows in
Their bodies spent, our lovers in sin,
Passions built until they couldn’t be contained
Unbridled lust with a single kiss did win.

Heart that ached, rebelled at being refrained
Waiting until they were unable to restrain
For the build up desire, boiling in their souls
Wanting bodies unable to stand the pain

Like over the fires hot coals
Their love boiled until they were bold
Enough to meet and surrender to a sin
Create a momentary treasure more precious than gold.

Veiled Revenge

Late sun's course lengthens the afternoon skies.
Fountains splash countering their falling sighs,
echoing hours where these women stay,
entrapped like rare birds caged for feathered thighs.

This one from Athens and that one Pompeii,
ripped from a homeland and carried away,
forced into beautiful luxury here,
bound to a cruel despot; bound to betray.

Who knows what hides behind veiled eyes so clear?
Who believes they are calm as they appear,
plotting revenge as they offer their charms,
plotting with eunuchs to kill the Vizier.
