I'm writing something goofy just for a change after all the time spent on my latest romance. I may not post it, but if I do, I'm not sure where.

Where does humor stand in the category hierarchy? Mine is a humorous (I hope) nonhuman-type story (not werewolf or vampire). Should it go in Non-erotic because it won't have any sex (I don't think)? Or can you get away with lack of sex in the humor & satire category?

And I have another story I'll finish eventually that is about a vampire but is also in a humorous vein (ba-dum-ching). In that one we'd have nonhuman, humor, and sex -- so what category would be best?

If its written expressly as humor, it can do as well as anything else in the category ( which isn't all that great, since humor is so subjective ) without sex.

Non-erotic is lower on the # of readers scale on average, though you have the potential of a higher score there.

I'd probably go with humor, since you obviously wrote it with that in mind.

Something to consider... if the humor plays with nonhuman tropes, that might be a better bet. The readers in Nonhuman are most likely to catch onto the humor and understand where it comes from. Of course, if they think you're poking fun at nonhuman, or them, the scores would reflect that. But humor within a category is sometimes most at home with those who know it best.

For example, A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is funny and non-erotic (well, to me anyway) but would fall firmly in science fiction.

I, for one, love humor and appreciate stories that provide a good-natured teasing of the genre. :rose:

I just submitted a story yesterday under the Humor & Satire category. I didn't even think about the Non-erotic category, even though the story is indeed non-erotic. I guess I'm just naturally inclined to identify what things are, rather than what they are not. I'd like to think that people who enjoy humor think the same way, too. The glass is half full.

Unless the humor is pretty subtle (I find some readers can't see irony or satire), why not try it out there?

I'd go with the humor & satire section if the story is about sex (even if there's no sex in it) since the category's definition is "A humorous take on all things sex".

If it's non-erotic and nothing to do with sex, you're probably better going with Non-erotic.

But, is it not a story you can put in the Nonhuman section?

If you're worried about disappointing readers looking for sex, then go for the non-erotic.

No Reason Not to Be Funny

Pretty much everything I write for Literotica has a humorous vein to it, and usually that vein has been slashed open so there is humor spraying all over the place. I have never put anything into the Humor category, though.

If you feel like your story isn't really erotic, I could see putting it in the non-erotic category... but why? If you're dealing with not-so-human characters, then either non-human or sci-fi/fantasy is probably the way to go, because that is SUCH a core part of the whole premise to your story, right? Labeling something "non-erotic" really doesn't tell you a whole lot. I'd say put a note at the beginning stating that there won't me much actual eroticism and you'll be fine.

I've been told that humor & erotica don't go together, because to get really aroused, people need to be able to turn their brains off... and humor is usually too cerebral for that. Yet not every scene in an erotic story is an erotic scene. Further, I've found that in real life, I'm much happier when I'm with a partner whom I can laugh with a little. (Ladies, it's okay to laugh in bed. It's also okay to point. It is NOT okay to point AND laugh.)

Oh this definitely is not erotic horror. When/if I get closer to finishing perhaps I can ask a couple of people to read and give me an opinion. I can eliminate many categories in terms of what this is not, and at the moment I'm not actually planning even any romance, let alone sex, which is why I wonder about non-erotic. We shall see.

I meant erotic humor.
