Should we eliminate the ability for posters to hide their identitites when taking cheap shots.

Since we don't use our real names, why not post that way?

I wouldn't mind if usernames were necessary for comments. I'm willing to bet, though, that a lot of trolls who leave snotty comments don't even have accounts.

Hi all!

Authors have the option to accept or not accept anonymous comments on the Public Comments Boards on each story.

If you go here:
http://www.literotica.com/members/main_options.php
you will see a option labeled "Accept Anonymous Feedback?"

If you click the "Yes" radial button, then anyone can leave public comments on your stories.

If you click "No", then only logged in Literotica users will be able to leave public comments on your stories.

If you don't want any comments on any of your stories, then click "Yes" under "Turn Off All Feedback?"

Do note that it may take a few hours for changes on posted stories to take effect.

If you have any questions on this or anything else, let me know! :rose:

SeniorGrandMistress Laurel, Thank you so much for reposting this basic intro to depth-charging and dive-bombing the trolls. I had some testy words with a fellow author awhile back on this very topic. If one doesn't wish unsolicited criticism, or even unsolicited praise, this is an easy way to avoid any thereof. I have heard the following ascribed to Jim Bridger, pioneer mountain man and explorer of the Rocky Mountains: "It's so easy to walk away from a dam fool talking."

SA Penn Lady, if any troll dares to attack one of the all-time greats like you, I promise revenge--if I can find the cowardly swine.

To the trolls I say, in the words of Mark Twain: "Because you're brave enough to tar-and-feather poor friendless cast-out women that come along here, did that make you think you had grit enough to lay your hands on a MAN? Why, a MAN'S safe in the hands of ten thousand of your kind—as long as it's daytime and you're not behind him." Huckleberry Finn, Ch. XXII.

Thank you, kind sir. Chivalry is obviously alive and well. I can, however, handle the trolls -- I find it a source of amusement most times that they take the time to post their ridiculous comments.

Although I agree with Laurel, in that we can turn off anonymous comments, I'm on the fence regarding the issue in general. I've received positive feedback from readers who've told me that although they love my story, they are afraid their friends and/or families will think less or ill of them should it be discovered that they have visited "that kind of site." So I can see where they'd want to keep it anonymous.

However, I've seen the topic debated elsewhere. Should newspapers allow anonymous comments, for instance? We know that anonymity provides many with a shield and from behind that, they post vitriol that they never would if they had to attach their name. Is that fair? I don't know.

What the authors really want is something that turns off only the negative anonymous comments. :D

(But, then, the authors can zap those themselves here.)

Personally, some of the funniest posts I receive are from Any Mouse. Especially the semi-literate ones telling me I can't write. :D

You're right, we can. :) I don't mind the negative comments. I guess what I'd like is my shot at rebutting it, although most times it probably isn't worth the effort. I've deleted two comments, I think, since posting here, and both times because the comments devolved into personal attacks. I thought that was over the line.

A couple of years ago there was a forum member who blatantly gave negative comments on my stories (and 1 bombed them). Too dumb not to refer back to the forum and use the same phrases being used on the forum. So, I just zapped those. Anything similar to that I just zap. I'm sure it infuriates them, which is reward enough.

Essentially, you are correct. I don't want to turn off all anonymous comments because most are favorable, and some are constructive even if the tone is negative. The comments I would prevent are the ones from persons who hate the category or subject matter before even reading the story (if it is even read at all).

I no longer zap them because I fear that would signal to the trolls that they are getting to me, and only encourage further negative behavior.

I don't think so. After zapping the "Hey, you erased me" follow-up comments, I think you'll find it's they who become frustrated and realize their impotence and they stop posting to the story. Their comments are important to them. They do want them to stay there.

Of the Posting of Threads

there is no end. This topic has been debated so often that, if it is not the all-time subject-matter leader, it can be no lower than third place. Again, one can turn off comments if one wishes, let 'em all hang out, or zap selectively. DSFDF.

Agreed because it is a different story when "anonymous" is telling someone they are the greatest!

Amazing

Totally and completely brilliant. I've been following this story since the first chapter, and I have to say I'm so deeply hooked into this story, it's not even funny. The character development, the plot twists, everything about it is nothing short of breathtaking; add to that the over-the-top erotica that literally drips from the pages, and you'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to not enjoy this story!

I can't wait to see how the final chapters come out, and what happens between Mark and Megan. I'll definitely be looking forward to anything you come out with after this as well; easily the best writer I've seen on this site by leaps and bounds. Keep up the amazing work!

I mean come on! How can anonymous be bad?

Trolls and comments

I hear you; On one hand, I've chuckled at critical comments that are longer than my stories. On the other hand, I've turned off anonymous comments because of one troll that followed me around until he screwed up and stayed logged in. Heh heh.

I don't mind negative feedback *IF* they tell me what they didn't like, or improvements they'd like to see. But comments like "this is the worst" or "total crap" without saying anything else, I think it's okay to zap those.

BTW Boxlicker101, some of your stories ar favorites of mine.

Rick
