I have a question I want to ask, but I would first prefer to know whether there is any way to trace my anonymous post. I suppose an answer from Laurel would be best.

Every time you post, logged in or not, your IP address is logged by the board software. The only people with access to this is Laurel and Manu.

With the right equipment and knowledge...anybody can be traced...or at the very least a destination can be determined.

People here cant trace and laurel and manu wouldnt just trace so you are safe

:p

There are several websites which you can go through to surf the Internet anonymously. Just look up "anonymizer" in any search engine.

Obviously, it is relatively easy for anyone to trace an anonymous post back to your ISP.

If you are suspected for a Federal crime, it's possible for the FBI to sopoena your ISP records which will list even your dynamic IP-traceable to your home computer. It is my understanding that it is difficult for other people to trace dynamic IP addresses to individual computers without consent of your ISP. If you have a cable modem or DSL you probably have a static IP, which is easier to trace. It's more awkward for the local police to access these accounts.

If you log in from a public library or a cybercafe or someone else's computer, it will obviously be difficult to trace to you--except through old-fashioned detective work.

Asking a question and you want to make sure no one can trace you down after you ask it.

This isn't keeping the wife and kiddies from figuring out that you perv on 'Net porn. This is flat out wantin' to troll and makin' sure no one can hunt your happy ass down and rip your throat out after you do it.

The answer is simple. The only person who can find you after you insult the everlasting fire out of whomever you've got beef with is Laurel. She doesn't do it for her convenience, she didn't do it when NSW got fucked over, she's not going to do it now. No one else here can access logged IP codes. Chances are you're on a dial up anyway. That means you have any one of a number of IP numbers so there won't be inconclusive evidence that you were the fucking prick who decided to rip into someone for no other reason than you're moldy dick cheese.

Feel free to troll in perfect safety.

With a subpoena most US based "anonymizer" sites have to give up their records.

Shy Tall Guy

Maybe so, but I seriously doubt someone who wants to post anonymously on Lit has an issue worthy of a subpeona.

One morning about one-thirty somebody "pinged" my computer.
having just installed ZoneAlarm and some other tracing program, i found out their name and address and telephone. Four people live there a man & wife and two children, A teenage boy and girl.

I was tempted to call and ask "what's up with this bullshit?"

If i had to guess their son was doing a little hacking/prospecting.
on the other hand someone could have been using their computer for cover. I let it slide and just pinged their computer.
After all i had there ip address! I have not checked my log in a while but i bet their ip adress is not on it.:D

Then there was this joker i traced back to an apartment building in Seoul, Korea. He had pinged my computer dozens of timies and i was tired of it. I pinged his and that was the last time i was bothered by him!

Don't be paranoid they already know what you're thinking and they're gonna find you anyway.

Hackers can also spoof an IP address. What you see ain't always what you get.

Disappointed

I would like to thank most of you for your replies. I have to say though, I am very disappointed in KillerMuffin. Someone asks a simple question and she thinks she knows everything about them and what motivates them and she figures that she should be calling them nasty names. KM, I don't think you're normally like that. Do you want to reconsider?

Unregistered...

are you going to ask the question or not??

I don't have all night ya know.. and the suspense is killing me.. come on.. ask it.. would ya?:)

I don't understand why you're worried about your IP address for a question, but if it truly is a question, then send someone a pm and they can copy and paste here. I don't think pm's are logged. Or send an e-mail to someone you trust to copy and paste your question.

Good to know
