This makes me sad.

An animal rights group is campaigning to shut down an exhibit in a Chinese mall featuring a lone polar bear in a small indoor enclosure.

Videos captured by Animals Asia show the adult male bear in small concrete display Grandview Aquarium in the Grandview shopping centre in Guangzhou, a city of eight million in southeast China.

In one video, posted by the group on YouTube, the bear lies listlessly with its cheek against the concrete floor, which is painted bright blue, between a background and pool painted the same colour.

*anything for a fucking dollar*

What will happen to the polar bear if they shut it down?
It's not like it can be successfully released

At least a real zoo. There they at least try to make the environment better for captive animals.

Zoos, SeaWorlds, MarineLands are so 19th century now. Even 20th century. You can see and learn so much more about the lives of animals on the WWW.

Animal captivity is all about the money. That's all it ever was but these places are falling behind the times. A 5-10 year old city kid would be just as enthralled over a cow, sheep or goat in a pen as a polar bear or chimpanzee. At least a goat can be touched or petted and donkey rides are always fun.

Domesticated herd animals have at least adapted to human captivity even though they would be infinitely happier scaling cliffs and ranging free.

If prisons had glass walls and folk were invited to see the criminals, it would be called inhuman. Wouldn't be as funny if a rapist threw his poo at the glass like apes are likely to do at times.

I've been to Guangzhou.

I saw half a monkey hanging in a restaurant cooler.

They simply don't think of animals in the same way that we do...
