Angels

Nice choice, George. He's hot...but you knew that. :)

Of course. I'm a heterosexual male who is sufficiently confident in my own sexuality that I can acknowledge when/if another man is objectively attractive. See how that works? :)

I'm an angel. Me. I'm a little selfish about it. My wings were clipped because I gave God some trouble when I wanted to go after Lucifer all by myself.

Has anyone seen my toy airplane? You know, the one with pedals I had to use for takeoff. Guess I'll have to settle for that DeLorean. All I need is 1.21 gigawatts.

Who first visualized angels (divine messengers) as naked people with feathery wings?

I can't answer that. My sister collected them and this is kind of a tribute thread. She died at 39. Angels remind me of her and I miss her every day.

Angels in human form show up in Genesis (whatever-it-is that wrestles with Jacob is described as a “man”) but I believe the wings start showing up in art in 300s and 400s AD.

Lemme check Wikipedia...

Wiki sayeth the earliest known depiction of angels with wings is on a sarcophagus from the late 300s. But Wiki also points out the winged Victories of pagan Rome as a likely inspiration.

Some early Christian art also gives angels bunches of wings, not just two. Same with Jewish mythology. Islamic art of course depicts them as more abstract.

And then there’s the ophanim aka galgalim, the Wheels, which make their debut in Ezekiel’s vision from the Bible. In the Middle Ages, rabbinical scholars were not allowed to study/contemplate the passages describing Ezekiel’s vision alone, but always in pairs, because it was thought to drive the lone student insane.
