Andreas stood looking over the castle wall. It was quiet tonight. With no reports of Orc raids, he had little to do. There was a dance tonight in celebration of the king's birthday. He's asked Lady Celeste to go with him. She'd answered with a polite no, but it was the look of fear in her eyes that disturbed him.
Wizards swore an oath to not misuse their power; still, it seemed that only a few trusted wizards. Andreas had been at the castle for three years and had yet to make even one friend. It was a lonely existence, and he hated it, but this was his assignment from the Guild of Wizards. He couldn't just walk away.
A sudden thwack against the castle wall pulled him from his thoughts. The orcs had been acting smarter over the past few weeks by placing their catapults deep in the forest. A wizard could not make a spell against something he could not see. He lit a torch and watched the sky.
The wait was a long one – maybe an hour or more. A movement in the sky caught his attention. He used a spell to send the rock back in the direction from which it came. If he was very lucky, it would destroy the catapult from which it came.
He hated this night watch; it was always long. It was the middle of the night now, and the forest was quiet – too quiet. There had been no further attacks from the orcs, but he was sure they were still out there.
A movement in the trees below and much closer than he would ever have expected caught him by surprise. Orcs never came this close for fear of arrows as well as his nasty spells.
Andreas thought of a smiple spell; what he called a stasis spell to hold someone still in one place. He hoped to get information from this foolish orc.
He made the spell and the movement in the forest stopped. Andreas descended the stairs and left the keep. He hurried to the castle gate and left by a small door.
He felt a bit foolish himself, knowing this could be a trap, but all his protection spells were in place.
The dark forest was forbidding even with the small globe of light that proceeded him. A torch here might start a fire, which was not a good idea. He could feel the stasis spell and continued in that direction.
He came to a quick stop. The female orc was huge and naked. Shackles were on her wrists and ankles with a short chain between them. A spiked collar was around her neck. One thing he noted was that she was a bit different than other orcs he'd seen, and he wondered if she was a mixed race.
He stood a few feet away. He didn't want to get too close. He removed the spell.
The orc said nothing for a moment, then spoke, “Help me. I've been a slave to the orcs for many years.”
Andreas understood orcish very well and wondered if this was a trap. But, it was the look of fear in her eyes that made him think she was speaking truthfully.
He made a spell and her chains fell away. “You are free to go now. Hurry before the orcs catch up to you.”
