Like many other people I heard the verdict, and I was appaled. This woman executed her children in a brutal fashion and for the next 40+ years she will be cared for by the prison system. She will be protected from herself, the other inmates, and even from her own personal demons (the estimate for her annual phyc. care is $50,000).
You know, she claimed to have done this out of love and a desire to protect her children. Jim Jones said much the same thing about his "children". He at least used something less brutal.
The prosecution sure didn't seem to be pursuing the death penalty very hard. Apparently, they didn't even present arguments during the sentencing phase, leaving only the defense to address the jury. No one has argued that Yates isn't profoundly mentally ill. Perhaps the prosecution privately acquiesced and agreed to the life sentence despite continuing to maintain their public stance of seeking the death penalty.
I am just thinking, "Who cares if she is mentally ill?" Anyone who murders has to be mentally ill, right? And she knew it was wrong because she called the police afterward, saying she had done something bad. So, why does anyone give a damn about her? Why are they spending money and time giving her treatment? And if she is a bible thumper, then shouldn't she be executed because you know, "an eye for an eye?"
C'mon, if she's gonna be a bible thumper, she can't pick and choose what parts of the book she wants to practice. It seems to me that if she were as God-worshipping as she claims, then she should INSIST on the death penalty or she would have killed herself after she killed the kids.
I think she should get drowned herself, but a life sentance will be satisfactory, since women's prisons are a hell of a lot more wicked than men's ever thought of being. She will be girlfriend to a few lovely ladies, and they will not be kind. In women's prisons, the crimes against a child are not accepted in their society and those who abuse, rape or kill a child, usually find their crimes revisited on them.
I still don't understand everyone saying "she is mentally ill, so she should be helped and not punished harshly."
Systematically drowning five children, chasing one down and murdering your own flesh and blood is crazy. Well, Osama Bin Ladin planned the brutal murder of hundreds of US and foreign citizens...wouldn't that make him crazy too? But we have no problem saying we want to kill him.
If Andrea Yates was male, would people feel sorry for her condition? No, probably not. You see, men who kill their children are sickos, absolute perverted assholes. But women who do it...well, they are "mentally ill."
