And your little dog too!!!

I didn't see any mention of cows. From what I gather, eating meat also leaves a huge environmental footprint, especially in Africa, where they're cutting down the rain forests to make room for cattle grazing.

The obvious solution to the dog problem would be to lock them in a "hamster wheel" type of device and make them generate electricity for the home. That would also be a good way to address the obesity problem in children.

Soylent Green is People!

If we eat all the people in a panic over Global Warming (I emphasize 'panic', not reasonable concern. Include the BBC in 'panic'.) that will reduce their carbon footprint and leave the world a quieter place, to boot. Sounds good to me. Begins searching recipe book for Long Pig

Yeah, easy to joke about. But isn't over population a major part of the problem? That and unsustainable agriculture to feed that population?

Exactly. Many parts of the world still utilize Neolithic forms of agriculture, eg: exhaust the land and move on. Much like the Dust Bowl in the 1930's, except they're eradicating forests and animal habitats. Attempts are made periodically to educate them in proper methods, but habit, superstition and ignorance often hold sway. Besides, most of the donated supplies and implements wind up in the hands of the dictator and/or government who/which promptly sells them to other countries for cash to maintain their lifestyles.

For the present. But have you noticed that everything worrisome is always "by 2030"? That's because the vast majority of the population increase over the last 150 years has to do with prolonged lifespan, not humongous birthrates. Starting in 2030, the latest estimates I've seen say that the world population will then start to decline--drastically. By the middle of the next century, the entire human species is predicted to be no more than live in North America today. Even if we don't start eating each other. The problem with Cassandras like Paul Erlich is that they're always from some other branch science. Erlich's a entomologist, for god's sake! None of them are trained demographers. The world's demographers have an entirely different take on things but no one wants to listen to them. They aren't scary enough.
