Kersten Glaven, of Grafton, Mass.

No, not Miss America, the winner of "the Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth" on Long Island New York.

September 1, 2004 -- A 12-year-old girl visiting her uncle turned out to be the big winner of the Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth.

Kersten Glaven, of Grafton, Mass., the youngest winner ever of the tourney, starts school next week with an extra $25,000 for lunch money. She caught the 14.58-pound fish on Saturday and weighed it in at Terminal Bait and Tackle in Kings Park.

While most anglers entered in the tournament fished both days, Kersten just fished on Saturday because she had to return to Massachusetts to get ready to enter the seventh grade. Her uncle Todd, who lives along Long Island's North Shore and who was also entered in the contest, said Kersten has been fishing ever since she could hold on to a fishing pole. When she heard her uncle was fishing in the tournament, Kersten asked if she also could sign up.

Apparently, the pretty blue-eyed angler is a ringer, having won a couple of fishing tournaments back home.

I heard about this on the radio and thought Lit could use some "good" news for a change.

It is good news - and a nice story. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, girls can bait their own hooks!

(from Sarah, who can certainly bait her own hook and whose grandfather was a commercial fisherman)

After I posted this, I did wonder if this is going to cause her problems in College with sports elgibility -- she is, after all, a "professional sport fisher" now. The NCAA doesn't like "professionals" playng sports it sanctions (except for minor league baseball players who are also good at football, apparently.)

Weird Harold,

That story sounds fishy to me.

Rumple Foreskin

it's not all that fishy -- she apparently just caught the one big fish and went home to get ready for school; leaving all the big, strong, macho, men to fish for second place. :p

$25,000 for lunch money??? Just what are they getting for a cafeteria meal in Grafton, MA??? For that metter, what are they serving?

Now that you mention it, that is a rather silly way to say "we don't know what she's going to do with the money, but at least she won't have to go hungry."

Of course she's not going to have to worry about lunch -- She knows how to fish!
