And, of course, this is a newbie question - how long for "pending" is the norm?

Sorry folks (You must have been asked this ad infinitum)

Part two of a story I wanted to submit is "pending" some 4 days after it was sent to the site (and for those of us who know that 2 weeks or whatever is the norm, again I apologise in advance)

My first part was approved in 48 hours - are the delays normal or an indication I "crossed the line" with Part 2?

Thank you

I'm sure this is a rather uninteresting point by now, but from my experience, approval times vary widely.

I have had stories approved in as little as 2 days, I had one take 12 or 13 once .... It was one I wouldn't have beens surprised if it went over to non-concent.

It seems to vary as free time varies and submisison load varies. It -seems- to me, that 4-5 days is the 'norm'

It does vary

It varies a lot.

from 48 hours to a little bit longer

They do thier best but are very busy people doing this in their spare time.

They will get to everything in time.

One consideration that Laurel takes into account is trying to keep a consistent mix and number of stories in each update.

Her goal is that most stories will be posted in 72 hours, but if she gets a hundred BDSM stories on Monday she's not going to flood the new stories listing with nothing but BDSM stories on Thursday -- especially since she tries to keep the new stories to about 40-50 each day. Some of those Hundred BDSM stories will get posted Wednesday, Some Thursday, Some Friday, and some will be saved for a week or two to balance out a flood of incest stories or some other category that is suddenly popular on a particular day.

If there is a special contest running, those stories get priority for posting and that can also delay another story being posted that isn't "time critical"

Between smoothing out the flow of stories, insuring a mix of categories, priority handling of contest entries, the daily allotment of 40-50 stories can fill quickly and result in a wide varaince in the time a story takes to get posted.

Staying away from the most popular categories, entering contests, and timing yur submissions for normally slow days are all things you can do to speed up the time your story spends in pending status.

One other point about pending stories -- if you open the story and re-save it after you check up on it, that changes the time stamp for submission and puts it at the end of Laurel's incoming stories queue.
