sound like an old person yelling at you to get off the lawn.

Folks in the interest of keeping the live writing threads focused on writing poems can we all agree to keep the non-poetry discussion out of those threads? For example, Writing Live, All of a Sudden Passion Suddenly, the 5 Senses thread, the 30/30 were all designed for poetry writing and not discussion. Smithpeter, who started both the writing live and passion original threads, was a real stickler about them being for poems only and I know he'd want us to respect that. Also poems tend to get lost in a lot of chatting and most people don't want to read through a lot of conversation trying to find a poem.

I realize that not all poems have companion threads and maybe we need a single discussion thread where all comments about poems in the writing threads would be welcome.

I'm not trying to single anyone out. I love you all and cherish your discussion, flirting, nattering, etc. I do it, too! But we need to keep some threads just for poems.

If anyone has suggestions, please speak up. Maybe if we talk about it together we can come up with a way that works for everyone. :)

sorry! :rose:

it's such an immediate, reactionary thing at times. i'll refrain.

I don't want anyone to shut up though! I want to find a better way.

Ditto  I like the discussion on the poems because I learn a lot then chatting makes this a more friendly forum.

Uhm, I don't know other then making chat threads for those poetry threads. Kind of gets redundant with so many. Maybe pin a thread then designate it for that would make it easier for people to see it and participate?

To clarify, companion threads for poetry challenge threads while a general one pinned for non poetry challenge threads.

That makes sense to me. Maybe a few more people will weigh in. I don't want to limit discussion at all--but some threads have better synergy if they only have poetry in them. I know I haven't honored that all the time myself so I kinda feel like an ass pointing it out lol, but I do think it's a good idea.

over the next week I'll change all my rambling in the passion thread to poems that way there is less rambling, but more of it at the same time ;)

I agree with the statement, companion threads tend to sink and sometimes finding them can be a pain, Neo's statement makes a lot of sense. similar to the keep the review thread clean one but stickied??

Sounds like a declaration of war. If you want me to leave just say so.

Not at all Harry, really. I don't want you or anyone else to leave. I think you personally add a lot to this forum and I know I'm far from the only one who feels that way.

This came up because people pmed me saying they are not so comfortable writing in what had previously mostly been poem-only threads. They don't want to scroll through a lot of chatting to find poems. And it may not seem relevant to newer users, but what I said about smithpeter is true. Those threads really were created for poetry and not discussion. Ask some of the other long-time users if you don't believe me.

I tried to state all this in a way that would not seem pointed at anyone because I don't intend it that way. As I pointed out, I've posted comments in those threads, too, but now there is more chat than poems in them and new people coming here don't realize that we want to save some threads just for poems. I'm just trying to find a work-around that the greatest number of people posting here can live with. I think Neo's idea is a good one but I wanted more feedback before I went ahead and did anything.

I have no axe to grind with you, but you can choose to believe that or not.

How to say this gently, dear mod, So someone has to read through the interaction of poets 'living' poetry? boo hoo. you want to go to a library and read single moments of poetry, not see how they were influenced by the world that surrounded them when they wrote it.
So in fact I think that this is (pointed at ALL of us) because...
you'll lose the mortar that binds us together

jibber here, jabber there>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
generates the flip-flop
all ready the place is segmented enough
Poets here/Not quite Poets there/ and wannabes in the New Poems
if you don't want commentos leave 'em on your hard drive

and if you don't want extraneous information added to a thread, don't introduce it

Well we have the interview with a poem, lots of companion and discussion threads and it's easy to quote or link if you want to talk about a poem. I don't expect that we'll ever stop the chat one hundred percent, but if those of us who are here try to limit it, we won't give newcomers the idea that every thread is open to chatting.

I'm not suggesting people don't talk and share ideas, just that we keep certain threads as poem oriented as possible. I think I am right that when people see a lot of talking, it puts them off using the threads for their poems.

I realize that we can't make everyone happy here though. What some people like, others don't. I'm just trying to find a happy medium.

I'm one those who commented to Angeline in PM about having to filter through too much chat to get to the poems. I asked her if there was an alternative so she posed the question to us all for feedback.

Let me know which threads n I'll avoid them like the plague with the exception of smithpeters thread.

I don't mind occasional comment, but I agree that it can be distracting when a comment morphs into an ongoing conversation not related to the thread.

My vote would be that poets take a lesson from the the military (!!!!) and "switch to another channel" when the conversation continues-- whether it's the companion threads or another place -- I don't really care.

Alternatively - Drink more!:cattail:

Would it help if I started a Live Writing and Discussion thread? I could and then people could choose to write and discuss in the same thread or not.

But I have to do it soon if you want me to start it today because I have to bake like a gazillion cookies. Packages must be in the mail by Thursday. :D

Oh! Per-lease! War? Ever thought of becoming a mod, HarryHill? It's a fine balance, anarchy or tyranny and we've had both in the past, it's a thankless job and not easy. I'm just glad there are people like ange, bronze and Lauren who'll take it on.

This was a small thing to ask and in no way directed at you, why make it bigger by squalling? Perhaps every one of the "poetry" threads needs a companion for those of us who need the chatter? What do you think?

send in the drones (BTW, new medal for that, outranks the purple heart - I digress)
and the PR squad
Alternatively - where did I put my bottle opener?

To a certain extent this can be largely controlled by a mere request, after all you are poets, you are supposed to know how to manipulate the language, I would also hope you are able to see though the converse also.

went and took a look - seems most the chitchat happens in the 'live writes' thread, so i'm largely to blame for this and offer my apologies, neo and to anyone else who has experienced annoyance at the breaks between poetry.

i don't honestly think (for me) a separate thread will serve the same purpose, have the immediacy or direct poet-to-poet connection. so what i propose to do is try to keep all my future responses there in poetic form or pm them. for others, yet another companion thread might serve. i do understand the desire to keep the thread 'pure' in keeping with - and out of respect for - smithpeter's original concept for the thread.

I'll tell you this as simply as possible. if someone does not want my vagrant thoughts in a thread I will remove my poems from that thread also by either copying them to file are simply deleting them. Love me love my dog. Squalling? no bawling that anyone would need a censor or become politically correct for a minority faction. might as well go to the poem a week thread and start there (although no one will miss them with the exception of a trout I once Damselled) already been kicked out of that one for extraneous posts.

fuck the PM's; transparentcy
smithpeter's original thread is gone
and who and why is he the patron saint? I know blasphemy, but I have yet to see anyone illustrate why he is so special. He also died in 2004, which means a lot of people passed through these portals who didn't know him, nor care.
Consider it a challenge, so why?
Parse it, diagram it.
He looked pretty much vers libre to me, and a few years after that the formalists held sway.
I know - off topic. I also know the response. So fuck me.
