And... my very first death threat!

I mean, I guess you can be happy you elicited a strong response?

No, death threats aren't normal, even by Lit trolling standards. If it really disturbs you (which I'd understand, it fucking disturbs me) you should let Laurel know.

Well, I reported the comment. I'll just let Laurel get to it whenever she can.

I'm sorry to see that happened. Comments get crazy around here and they can be bad enough, but nobody should have to deal with that shit.

I'm glad you reported it. Hope something productive comes from doing so.

Do let us know what, if any, response you get from Laurel.

I've never gotten a death threat, but I would not take it seriously if I did. I've had complaints about LW and IR stories, but never that bad.

That was fairly tame, I've gotten some out of their mind comments.

Best to date was the one that said they were going to come to RI and hunt me down, then gang rape me, then pour acid down my rancid cunt. Obviously assuming I'm female.

Best part was this one had an e-mail I could reply to. Not bright when you consider something like that could be forwarded to the police.

Instead I simply replied. "I'm a man, not a woman. E-mail me when you're in town I have something special for you."

No response of course.

But these type of comments are a great indicator of the type of 'man' we have rampant on this site. I think its safe to say man because with maybe a few exceptions(there are always exceptions) women don't be have that way.

Another reason to consider doing away with anonymous once and for all and having some type of e-mail on record to make people like this thing twice.

Yeah, right. Forgot where I was posting for a minute. Thought I was on a site that gave a shit about standards and respected their authors and sane readers.

Is this, like, some milestone for authors here? :p

Someone just said they wanted to snap my neck for "writing a crappy lie"!

Here's the story: https://www.literotica.com/s/megans-muscle-tussle

which incidentally was a commissioned piece.

Gee whiz... lol.
As unbelievable as this may sound, many of the men here don't like women. Go figure with this site all about sex. Moreover, many of the men here don't like women who write erotica and/or pornography. Why? I don't have a clue.

Over the years many of the men here have chased away most of the best women writers. Why? I have no idea. Just look around, there are very many women writing here. It's all men.

I've had dozens of death threats mostly because I'm a woman. When I started writing here, I started writing under my brother's name, Freddie, and posted stories under BostonFictionWriter because I was scared to death to write erotica on a porn site as a woman. Then, in 2009, someone hacked my Facebook page and outed me as the woman that I am. That person posted personal things about me from my Facebook page. I complained to Laurel and she deleted it.

Now, even though they know that I'm a woman, they call me a man. They call me Freddie. Laurel knows I'm a woman because she made the prize money checks out to Susan Parker. I've won more than twice the prize money than any other author on the site. Maybe that's why they hate me (lol).

It all started when I earned my first Green E, another reason for these whackos to hate me. Most writers here have never heard of a Green never mind earned one. Laurel awards Green E's for what she perceives as the best story. I've earn three of them under three different names.

Still even after Laurel deleted the Facebook comments the damage was done. I've had hateful and hurtful men post shit, shit, shit in the comments section of every one of my stories. I've had hateful and hurtful men give me enough bashing 1 votes to lower my scores enough to delete all of my red H's. Now, I close the voting whenever my scores are 4.5 or higher.

There are lots of men masquerading as women on this site. I'm not one of them. I was born female on July 26, 1972. I like being a woman but I hate being a target and being attacked by maladjusted, women hating men. A survivor of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, I've had more than my fair share of men hating on me and attacking me. Now, I just want to write my stories. Yet, I still receive poisonous, sick e-mails every week.

My best advice is just to delete hateful comments and ignore hateful e-mails.

Good luck with your writing.

Oh, I think it's more about roles. Some (and only some) have strong opinions on a woman's role. Even in fictional stories. Which is kind of absurd on a site like this but there you are. Or there we are. Lol. It is what it is. Real life is often a lot worse and you can only do what you can do. I treat it mostly the way I do in life. Ignore. Delete. Don't respond. One of those things that goes with writing anything that challenges people's views. And we all know there's a wide range of views don't we Cyrano. Cough cough. :D

Oh dear... am so sorry to hear that Susan. Thank you for your kind words.

And I agree, Chloe... it's sad, and for a while I thought things were changing out in the mainstream... but it looks like things took a giant step backwards.

Oh I don't think it's backwards so much as when you go public on a site like this you're exposed to people and their views you might otherwise not encounters. I mean we challenge their views but they challenge ours too. And we challenge each other's even here. Take Cyrano, we know each other's political spectrum and that challenges both of us. I think the abusive stuff is just a wake up hello real world thing.

Congrats! I've been here for a few years now and I only got my first one this year.

It's hard to say what it all means. I could go all socioeconomic and note that white males of a certain age and economic strata have seen their formerly unquestioned cultural authority eroded by outsourcing, automation, immigration by other races, the sexual revolution and other left leaning changes in the culture, etc. etc., to the point where they have become, effectively, a minority voice with no special rights or powers. Nothing in their long lives prepared them for losing the throne in this fashion and they're furious and bitter. It explains recent politics in the US and I think it explains the slow but noticeable rise in hate on internet sites, this one included. Even ten years ago news sites freely allowed people to comment on news stories. But the comments got so toxic that lots of sites have turned off or otherwise restricted comments. Even a site like Lit isn't going to be immune - to some people, stories about gay this and cheating woman that and interracial the other is just more salt in the wound.

Or, I can quote my dad, who told me early in life "Some people are just idiots. Born that way, live that way, die that way, and there's nothing you can do about it. Just walk away."

Still good advice, and it's the basis of my ignore list and various filters in various places.

Anyway, OP, don't sweat it. On this site, having someone hate you is practically a badge of honor.

Well, healthy political discussion is one thing...

The thing is, in my case, I am kinda surprised, because this person apparently wants to "snap" my neck for writing something that offends their deep sense of justice or something!

It was a scenario I wrote on commission. That little detail - the "unfair" element - was part of the brief.

But well, the person really hates it. Amazing. So I guess that's the world view I'm exposed to, now. :p

It's a really interesting phenomenon to be part of, this growing intolerance but I don't think it's specific to any one group. We're fragmenting into polarized groups and everyone is becoming more and more intolerant of others. Increased exposure breeds increased contempt and dislike or even outright hatred for the other. LIt is probably more mild than some and it's great they still allow comments.

That point about so many sites turning comments off because they were so toxic is I think valid to a point. The point being I think that the majority of views expressed were toxic to the views of those controlling those sites, not necessarily that they were toxic per se. Now wanting to snap someone's neck is a bit beyond toxic and more downright threatening but that's where we are. Me, I'd post that on the comments along with a critique of the writer but that's just me. I'm more of the "go suck on a dead dogs dick" type of responder myself. And I do love that line. I didn't copyright it so where appropriate, please feel free to utilize as needed. I don't think that's cultural misappropriation :D

Well on the one hand, I know how reading something like that can be a downer, but congratulations! you've been discovered by the Dark Side.

Ugh.

You can delete it, as pointed out by others, or leave it there, or delete it and save it somewhere in a sort of scrap book of best and worst comments.

Oh indeed. :D

True dat.

(And the foregoing commentary also seems accurate to me. Point of fact the notion of an Internet without curators and moderators was always naive -- going right back to Usenet, every online space that tried to do without has always found that once the circle broadened beyond a small circle of scientists, intellectuals or geeks who all knew each other, trying to do without moderation was folly. Some just take longer to learn than others.)

It sucks but that is where we're at today. As some have said there is a lot less civility in the world in general. And the internet while a blessing in many ways (like instant research) brings out the worst in some people or at least enables their bad impulses due to the perceived anonymity.

People on mporpgs will give death threats because some player's toon beat their toon. If people don't like your story genre or how you wrote it they feel entitled to go beyond the pale. If in your story a fictional character lets their fictional cat outdoors then bird fanatics feel free to say you should be killed. I don't take threats seriously and ignore them but people shouldn't make them either. I can't think of a solution except restricting comments but then you lose out on the good or at least not crazy responses also.

Well just look at some of those news stories about gamers getting annoyed coz they were beaten and making a swat call. Some kids sitting on his pc having fun and a swat team bursts in. It goes beyond words sometimes. That anonymity is pretty important.

I haven't gotten a "death threat" on this site yet. I have gotten a few "you want advice? Drink a gallon of bleach you tranny scum" comments....LoL. Not sure how that would be viewed as "constructive criticism" in anyone's eyes, but?🌹🌹🌹

I stopped reading comments long ago. I haven't even looked in so long I don't even remember if I have them enabled.

The fact that it was put into the Fetish category might have had something to do with it. It's one of those catch-all categories, where people look for their own particular kinks and don't have much fondness for other people's kinks. I've never even tried to write for that category.

I'd just delete the poster's comment and move on. But I would be curious to see if Laurel bans the poster.
