"On December 17, 2018, our Community Guidelines will change and adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr."

This just showed up in my Tumblr feed.

This could change a whole bunch of my postings. And may kill many many hot links.

:eek::mad::eek::mad:

So it goes...

Fuckers!

If not for porn, what's left on Tumblr? It might as well be facebook.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

I don't like most people on my Facebook feed - and I have had sex with a few of them over the years...

I love almost everyone here - and I have never had sex with anyone here (aside from in my head while wankin'....)

Just sayin... :rose:

Yeah, I just went in and read it.

It's too bad there isn't a place for exploring kink, body positivity, sexuality. I follow one girl's Tumblr who is all about fat kink. It's pretty raw and emotional and sometimes pretty graphic! I like it!

I get the hard core stuff. There is a lot of that everywhere. And I get there's a fine line in figuring out what's offensive or pornographic. The age old question.

Booo!

It sounds like we have to go back and "fix" our tumblr pages???

I still have Flickr to surf porn, but it just not the same. And they are in trying to force folks to go "Pro" and pay for larger posting limits.

*sigh*....

wait, there's non-adult content on Tumblr?

This is a pity - I don't post there, but I read occasionally, and I know there's a certain weird sense of community there. Reminds me of LiveJournal back before that all went to crap :-(

Definitely not applicable here.

I've never had a Tumblr account but this is going to make me awfully sad if it affects your posting here. :rose:

I intend to keep things as interesting as possible for as long as I can. It will be different. Some of the hardcore stuff will change, no doubt.

Wow, well there goes that. I use Erome for mine, it's not as private but it works for my needs.

^ NOT AN AD. Just info sharing lol

Ughhhhh.

True suckage.

There goes my blogcafe for filthy musings, DD/lg stuff and personal porntopia. On a less self-centered level, sad to see whole communities of kinksters obliterated, as well as a safe place for people to discover who they are and how they tick.

It was nice while it lasted.

February 2019 news headlines:
"Tumblr.com financially collapses after >70% of advertising revenue dries up"

No but really, what? Porn blogs are tumblrs bread and butter, I don't for one second buy that they're doing this out of measly concern for maybe-possibly preventing a teen or religious prude from stumbling across a fetish blog.

I put 0.002 Bitcoin on Apple strongarming tumblr executives into erasing all their adult content in exchange for allowing tumblr to continue being distributed on the appstore.

I guess imgur is the new tumblr?

I got this email from Dreamwidth today. Their interpretation is the same as Blue's:

With the new update to Tumblr's community guidelines announcing that they will no longer permit adult content on their site, we'd like to take a moment to reassure all y'all that we have your backs. With a very few exceptions (such as spam and the like), if it's legal under US law, it's okay to post here. We're 100% user-supported, with no advertisers and no venture capitalists to please, and that means we're here for you, not for shady conglomerates that buy up your data and use it in nefarious ways.

Tumblr's definition of "adult content" seems to be inherently visual, and I also wanted to remind people that we do have basic image hosting. (It's definitely not as slick and easy to use as Tumblr's, I won't lie, but it does exist.) If you want to include images in your posts, you can upload them and the site will give you HTML that you can paste into your entry. Or, if you have post-by-email set up, just attach the image to the end of your email and it'll be posted. All users have a 500MB image hosting quota right now. I know that's small for people looking for a place to host NSFW image blogs, but we are reviewing usage statistics to see if we can increase it, or at least make it possible for people to pay for more quota like you can for more icons.

For those asking whether we have a mobile app: we don't at the moment! There are many (soooooo many) prerequisites that we have to do first, which we've been working on but haven't yet finished, because we're dealing with a lot of systems and architecture decisions that were made nearly 20 years ago by now. (A mobile app would also be subject to the same censorship pressure Tumblr faced -- it's looking pretty good that Apple taking the Tumblr app out of the App Store was the proximate cause of Tumblr's content guidelines change, and Apple is notoriously strict on apps for sites that allow user-generated content -- so even once we have one, it's even odds on how long it'll be able to stay available for certain platforms.) We've been trying to improve the website's experience on small screens in the meantime, and that's an ongoing project that we'll do our best to devote some more attention to over the next few months.

No one but you will be able to see NSFW images on your blog, and you will be unable to see any NSFW images on anyone else’s blog. That’s it. THEY ARE NOT DELETING NSFW BLOGS. Just flipping adult images to Private. Calm your tits, people!

Shank....I feel your pain. This is a huge sea change.

but, but, but... I go to Tumblr to see other peoples porn, not mine. Why would I post mine if only I can see it.?

As both an exhibitionist AND a voyeur Tumblr was a very fine place indeed...

Tumblr's new policy illustrates the after-effect of large corporations acquiring and/or coercing smaller, innovative companies and then forcing them to go "mainstream" to comply with corporate "ethics" (oxymoron), and poorly thought out government policy.

It's unfortunate since Tumblr provides a very large cache of professional and amateur kinky images. I'm sure other sites, such as Imgur, will gain additional traffic as people move their content off Tumblr.

The ultimate irony is that while an image showing a tiny bit of a nipple will be banned, I'm sure violent images and hate speech will still remain. It reflects our society's upside-down priorities.
