...and Cordelia giggled.

Cordelia was kind enough to review a poem I wrote. She said:

I giggled aloud when I read Dark Feel in Pink Chiffon, enough to have the rest of the household run to see why I was giggling...

Now the actual poem is of no importance, but it is less than 350 keystrokes long. I have an image of several bags of protoplasm moving about a building in California in response to 350 fingerstrokes made a few days earlier by another sack of protoplasm several time zones away.

Perhaps this is trite, but that image amazes me. The information density in a short series of abstract symbols causes laughter then real physical movement in a different time and geographical location. It strikes me that this is one of the core symptoms of poetic expression - an information density that triggers a response far in excess of the apparent stimulus.

Now I realize that I have just described the effect of “poetic imagery” in a long winded fashion, but I feel that there is more here than a discourse on symbols or semiotics.

Cutting to the chase:

This thread is dedicated to exploring ... the poetic implications of Cordelia’s giggle.

No rules this time.

That's the most beautiful thing I ever heard. :)

Angeline...Lauren needs a happy poem.

Aw shucks. But I must in all humility demur. I fear your recent "sport" with sadie has left you mildly jaded. Fear not...help will arrive shortly.

It was the right time of the year, and it was a loyal combat. You'll notice I wasn't even armed then.

But enough of that, poetry and giggles are what's important today.

   My one love my fountain-pen
alga at the bottom of a poem
here I am leaned over a dream
where words are made of chocolate

Mmmm... chocolate :D

It may have been loyal, but hardly sporting. The poor thing didn't have a chance.

Ooooh is that dark chocolate? Don't mind if I do. Thanks.

DARK chocoloate? Uh oh... I wouldn't do that if I were you. You know how Sadie loves to lay claim to all things DARK.

By the way, I loved what you said about keystrokes and protoplasm. I shall have to meditate on this in the blue glow of my lavalamp this evening.

NO! NO! NO! It is "mildly jade", not "jaded". Why won't you learn from the master? ;) :p :D

Interesting idea. I often wonder about the effect of words that I have arranged. Do they have the intended effect? Do I have a reaction I wish to elicit? And did I, in fact, elicit that reaction?

I think the feedback is a good indicator of that. But what about the other reads that sent no feedback? hmm....

Despite the fact that I live in Nevada and I rarely giggle (I am a chuckler), I found this to be quite thought provoking.

Besides, who doesn't like to see their name on a thread?

Grins and ponderings,

Cordelia

Sorry about Nevada.

You guys have too many States.

The good news is Lauren has chocolate. Help yourself.

The bad news is sadie is loose again.

This thread can hang 'til the smoke clears.

it seems to me that if so few of darkmaas' keystrokes can effect so many distant bags of protoplasm, that it could be supposed that unseen keystrokes with enormous information density might be setting in motion the actions of all of we bags of protoplasm.
Or, another way to think of it could be that if action A was set in motion by poem B, there is a good chance that poem B was the result of action C which was set in motion by poem D, and perhaps the entire known universe was set off by one initial poem that burst forth with such information density that everything since has been the result of that one initial poem. (I now call this the big slam theory)
Perhaps that series of actions will eventually recreate that incredibly dense original poem and it will set in motion a whole new course of events creation a whole new universe, and maybe the cycle will continue as long as there is poetry.

if this is true, I hope it's a dirty limerick.

if B causes A,

and C causes B, but not A,

and D causes C but not B or A,

then

we are in a state of poetic devolution

and

will all be limericking soon.

I love your train of thought! There must be a pony of a challenge poem in there somewhere! :) How about: "Big Bang Poem", "The First Poem", "Information Density", "The Poetry of "Chaos", "Newton's Three Laws of Poetry", or maybe "The Anti-Entropic Effect of Poetry in a Closed Universe".

Regards,                                 Rybka

I'd love to see the results of a "Big Bang Poem" challenge. Too funny! Should we go for it?

did someone say limericks ?

just for you, sweet guy :rose:

My favorite man-nequin is OT
who writes wistfully wry poetry
he's got naughty wood spankers
for which everyone hankers

Did someone use the spanker word on this thread?!
Oh, this is the cordy giggly thread. I need to start at the top and see what this is all about. (why isn't there a senna snickers and sniggers thread? Or rybka guffaws and hee haws?)

Maybe my giggle is creating a new universe of laughter. My giggles are not loud, but they are packed with joy.

I wish I could start the "Big Giggle."

I was under the misguided impression that the only true limerick was a dirty limerick.

A thousand apologies for dragging you into this. It started as a profound and thoughtful consideration of poetic imagery and has devolved into this tawdry excuse for a thread.

And you think this is unusual? I blame entropy.

I thought those were great thoughts, darkmaas. And I even posted some serious ponderings.

We'll re-visit the thought some other time.

Smiles and thermodynamics,

Oh goodness. I, for one, am sorry that I made a frivolous comment on this thread. It's my fault for not properly reading the earlier posts to see what this thread was about.
