And another one bites the dust :(

My favourite book was 'A Small Town in Germany'. It came between his earlier thrillers and the Smiley era. There is an almost Kafkaesque drabness and pointlessness to the whole cold war setting. Wonderfully written, a masterpiece.

And he published almost to the end. His 2019 novel, Agent in Place, while no The Spy Who Came in from the cold was still better than most. With him passes a genre of cold war fiction.

Whenever I read his work, I was reminded not to claim that I was a writer, because he set the bar so high.

Sad.

His "The Night Manager" was recently made into an excellent TV series.

His books were (of course) better than any TV series.

RIP

This was the first of his I read. Since his is the genre I write in the mainstream, he has been a writing guide (along with Graham Greene and Lawrence Durrell) for me ever since.

You have excellent taste, Sir. :)

So the Good Lord has both; George Smiley AND James Bond !
May they rest in peace
