“Shut Up! Get over here and sit down!” The thunder clap that expelled from the old, maple staff upon hitting the stone floor blasted me off my feet. I landed on my ass a few feet away from where I was standing mocking the old, senile wizard. Well, at least I thought he was senile anyway. Slightly rolling to my side, I reached down and rubbed my butt bone as it went into a mode of painful throbs. “Was that necessary!” my anger surfacing, then regretting as the old man’s eyes turned towards me. His lips muttering for another lesson teaching blast. Before I knew it my ass was searing hot forcing me to jump up and move about to cool it down. “Okay, Okay!” I muttered angrily.
Fanning my ass with one hand, and rubbing it with the other was a sight to be seen. Truly a mentor to student aftermath effect of pissing off a mentoring wizard. His raised brow and quizzical glare was asking me if I had enough and was ready to sit my ass down and pay attention to him. Giving my ass a few more maturing rubs. I moved over to the stool and looked into his eyes. “One day! One day you know it will happen.” I spoke as my ass was sliding onto the stool top. “Yes, but not this day.” his creaking voice informed me.
Glaring at him, I remained silent, my ass couldn’t take any more blasting lessons. I shifted my weight from side to side upon the stool trying to find which way hurt the less. This was my sixth time here this week learning to translate this ancient writing. I still didn’t understand why the hell should I learn to translate it if it is ancient and not being used currently. I didn’t ask this question for that was what got my ass ripped with a freezing spell yesterday. Damn! That hurt like hell. So I just sat there rolling my eyes till I looked over at him, and he was muttering once more. “OKAY!” I dropped my gaze down to the parchment and began to translate the words.
That was a year ago, my mind remembering those days for I was now looking at a parchment that had that very same ancient writing to it. It spoke of a tome called Dertimis Vonkar it was a book that held some powerful magic spells that hasn’t been seen since the war of the gods. It was rumored that these spells was what locked the demons of the abyss into their planes of existence and I wanted this book, unfortunately I wasn’t the only one. I knew of at least seven mages of the first circle has seen this parchment before I had someone steal it. That nearly broke me, but it was worth it, at least I thought so for now I’m being followed, chastised, threatened, and several other attempts that I cant even give them a proper name for the type of attempts they were. It was time to get some help.
I learned through numbers exchanging of coinage to numerous number of tavern keepers, merchants, guards, bar maidens and wenches that I was to speak to a human Barbarian named Mae Van Duran. The only problem was finding her, she was always moving about for the precious commodity to mankind, the gold coin. After two months of spending my coinage, I was able to get her location, it was in the free city of Grayhawk. A tavern called the silver wolf was her place of residency when she was visiting the city. I was only two days away from my very first quest completion.
It was nightfall when I entered through the gates. I wish I could’ve meet the person whom called this the free city! It took my very last platinum to just walk through the damn gate! Well, it was only a gold piece when I first got here, but after a few bad choices of words, and a few not so nice cantrips my price was rather high. I slumbered away from the guards for once again my mouth costing me. Their laughter seemed to chastise me for a few blocks before fading out by the other sounds of the city.
I was thankful that the tavern was on the main street and only a few blocks away from the main gate. I was tired and short on coinage. I hope it didn’t cost me anything to find this Mae. For if it did I was done before I even started. Upon reaching the door, I paused took a deep breath. My mind going over the details of what this Mae looked like. I reached into my pocket and pulled the only ruby I had to pay her with. I was told it was worth thirty gold but knowing my luck I was probably conned on this one as I was on the other gems I used to pay people with.
Brushing the traveling dust off my cloak, pushing some strands of hair out of my eyes, I entered the tavern. The atmosphere was one of common nature for a place of business like this, however, there was one thing that was different. There was a bunch of people crowed around this table. There was a rather large man sitting at this table, his arm bent in an upright position and centered in the middle of this table and on the other side was Mae, the one that I have been looking for months now. I slowly moved over to the table to watch what was going on.
