Its a lot more then its tighter, least for me from the woman's point of view. Its a completely different feeling then vaginal intercourse. A change of pace, something I challanged myself to learn to do, to be able to accomidate my hubby's cock (which is pretty thick) and other such things.

i ask because there was a point where i had a lover who has contacted me recently. i know he loves anal sex but i am not sure that i can convince myself it is worth it for a lover. the sex between us was great but that created such a division between us.

Anal sex can, for many people, be one of the most wonderful additions to thier sex repituar. Others will never grow to like no matter how hard they try.
I'd recommend getting to like during your self lovin sessions before trying it again with him. Buy a "set" of anal plugs ranging in size to get your body used to accepting something inside there.
