He waited trying to ignore the ticking clock above him. His large hands tapped the plastic chair he was sitting in as he shifted his large bulk. Every so often his hand would come up to the pocket of his suit patting the cardboard box of cigarettes and making sure they were there. The suit he was wearing was cheap and looked a size to small on his large hulking frame. His tan skin was taunt except for on his face where worry lines were already starting to appear. His bald head shone slightly in the harsh fluorescent lights. Every so often he would turn his wrist checking a beat up old watch that at one time looked expensive.

The minutes ticked by until the door finally opened. A woman stepped out wearing a business suit topped off with heels. She was a younger woman Hispanic but with strong commanding eyes. She regarded him for several seconds before gesturing for him to get up.

“Come on Jimmy” She said her tone soft and professional.

Jimmy sighed rising out of the chair and moving to the door. He paused at the threshold and looked at her his eyes searching hers for some hint at what was to come. She gave nothing back and simply inclined her head motioning for him to come in.

He did so entering the conference room. The brass was currently seated each of their faces impassive as he stepped in.

“You guys should become a poker team” Jimmy said unable to stop himself “The lot of you could go pro”

Two of them chuckled but the rest simply smiled. Jimmy dad always told him to open with a joke. A joke put people at ease his father would say when Jimmy was younger. It also can disarm a person and leave them open for you he would also say. Jimmy found some truth in his father’s advice over the year and still followed his advice even after the drug addicts killed his father.

“Have a seat Detective” The Chief of Police Riker said “You to Lieutenant Cruze”
Jimmy and his boss the woman who called for him both sat down. Under the table she reached out grabbing his hand and giving it a firm squeeze. Jimmy returned the squeeze thankful she was here and not say his ex-wife. He would be lying if he said Cruze wasn’t his best friend. She was his boss but she trusted him and took advantage of his long years on the force.

“The Internal Investigation into Detective Jimmy Capillo has been completed” Riker said leaning forward and tapping the report on the desk “You’ve been cleared from the charges”

Jimmy blinked surprised he glanced at Cruze and she nodded giving him a not so subtle look that said “don’t speak”. Jimmy turned his attention back to the police chief and waited.

“Formally we cannot find any evidence of the allegations made by the patrol cop on duty into the matter of you shaking down drug dealers” Riker said knitting his hands together and leaning in. Their eyes locked together and Riker paused before continuing to make sure he had Jimmy’s full attention.

“That being said” Riker said “You vendetta against the east side drug trade needs to end”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Chief” Jimmy replied ignoring the pointed look Cruze gave him.

“Don’t play dumb with me you little shit” Riker growled rising up and adjusting his dress uniform “You’re off the reservation Jimmy I know your partner died but you should have brought them in by the book. What you did was dangerous and reckless and the next time you WONT have your stellar reputation to save you. Go back to being a detective not a vigilante”

With that Riker left filing out along with the other members of the review board. Jimmy watched them all go not saying anything until the door finally swung close.

“FUCK”

…………………………………………
TWO WEEKS LATER

“Shit I’m late”

Jimmy hit the switch and activated the siren on his sedan. Traffic parted for him like a sea and he sped up as he raced through the city. He left the upper areas of New York behind trading them in for the rougher poorer districts. He gazed at them fondly as he whipped past them finding a kinship more with this part of the city than the upper areas. He was born here and he would die here protecting people as best he could. There was nothing more important than that except family.

Or at least that was the way it was SUPPOSED to be. He never was very good at it. His wife divorced him three years into his police career. She cited in the divorce that he wasn’t ever home and was possibly cheating on her. He never had but he also never bothered to come home either. There was always another case needing his attention, always another victim in the waiting room that he could help. She said he was more in love with the job than her…. And she was probably right.
She took their daughter with her. Kelly was all he had left now in terms of family. She didn’t deserve to be a victim of a broken marriage and so he tried for her. He wasn’t always there for her but he did his best during her years growing up. Was it enough?

If you asked her probably not.

He pulled into the parking lot and shut the lights off before he caused a scene. There was a time when Kelly would have found it cool to see her cop dad coming in lights blaring. Now at thirteen she just called it embarrassing. Puberty was a situation he was still trying to catch up to and figure out. Every time he turned around there was a new thing she didn’t like a new rule he needed to learn.
He jumped out of the car and ran moving towards the soccer game. He was late like always but not by much. They were just starting when he came up to the field. He saw Kelly playing goalie and he frowned. She hated that position and preferred to be a striker. He made a mental note to talk to the coach afterwards and give him a piece of his mind!

He pulled the pack of cigarettes out of the pocket of his jeans and lit up. He watched the game and smoked every so often letting his eyes drift around the field. There was a football game going on in the next field and the memories of his own small high school football career bubbled to the surface. He was good but never good enough to make something of it. Sometimes he wondered though… if he applied himself more would something have come of it?

“Past is the past” He reminded himself another one of his father’s lines bubbling to the surface “No sense letting it drag you down”

He took one last drag and flicked the cigarette into the ash tray. He moved over to the concession stand getting in line with the football players to get Kelly and him a drink.
