For those of you who publish on Smashwords you know that on your sales dashboard it keeps a running count on all your sales through the main Smashwords site.
Now SW itself will tell you that the vast majority of your sales will come through the premium catalog, meaning they come mostly through affiliates not SW themselves.
This morning I noticed that my latest sale was my 5000th on SW's platform.
I never would have imagined that number back in March of 2011 when I published my first e-book. "Weekends with mom" which was a tweaked version of my first ever lit mom/son story Weekends with Laura.
I sold a whole seven copies that month and my first ever quarterly payment from them was $13.11
But I recall it being the best $13 I ever made.
This month I received my 12th consecutive 1K plus payment which I've achieved by constantly putting up new e-books (working on number 95 this morning)
I'm posting this for two reasons, one, I'm pretty proud of it, but two to show anyone just starting out not to get discouraged when you're not selling anything or making any money right away.
Keep at it, keep writing, keep publishing your writing. The selling market is very much like literotica as in you build a following of people who are always looking for your next story, but here its your next book.
SW has a bookmark feature similar to lit that tells you how many people have marked you so they can easily find out when something new is out. I remember being so excited when I got me first one now I'm on 145.
Yes, some can get lightening in a bottle and take off right away, but mostly in this industry its steady consistency that wins the race.
So never quit when that first book does nothing because few ever really do....but they will sell when you have more to offer. SW shows multiple sales and I get a lot of them.
Also a sincere thanks to many people here who helped me out with all things publishing including Pilot whose how to on e-book publishing was very helpful to me when I was trying to get started.
Things have changed a lot since he wrote it, but its still worth checking out, I'd like to link it, but won't without permission.
