I just picked up a book on the Knights Templars. It looks intersting. I am hoping that it is well written and factual, not one of the oh so many ones out thre with consiracy up the Wazoo.

The Title? "The Templars" by Piers Paul Read.

I'm hoping it is good read.

I've done my fair share of reading on the Templars, ranging from the 'they found the Holy Graal and took it to America' idea to 'they formed the Priory of Scion' idea to 'they were just religious, zealous brutes' idea.

I found them all interesting and tantalizing. Very few historical groups have sparked such intense contention and debate as the Knights Templar.

My advice . . . read whatever you have about them with a grain of salt. I doubt any text about the Templars comes too close to the actual truth.

IIRC, Piers Paul Read is the author who documented the plane crash in the Andes mountains of a soccer team, where the survivors were forced into cannibalism to survive, Alive is the name, I believe. He did a good job relaying factual information and motivation with that. I hope you have an enjoyable time with the book.

I'd like to hear what you thought of the book, as well, when you're finished.

Couldn't have put it better myself! A fantastic group that no one realy knows very much about. I too doubt anything written about them is 100% acurate, I don't think we will ever know what truely went on, and there actual motivation.

Good read though, have fun

I think it's fairly well documented that they operated the world's first multinational banking system (taking care of the pilgrims' monetary matters) and thus became too powerful for the church to tolerate.

But of course, under torture, they "confessed" to some pretty outrageous stuff, thus fuelling speculations for years to come.

Well come on. When someone is holding your genitilia in a large pair of Red Hot Pliers you're liable to tell them anything they want you to say.

I just need the threat of red hot pliers, or the promise of doughnuts. I'd sell the world for some tasty doughnuts...

I'll pass on the donuts, but I might be tempted by some good BBQ I didn't have to make myself. I said might be tempted, it would depend on the circumstances.

Okay I just finished the book. I have to admit it is one of the best I have read on the templars. It was better than I had expected, hell it was better than I had hoped. Well worth reading.

The author did mention the myths, but only at the very end of the book and then only in passing. In my opinion he did an outstanding job.

You know, I was meaning to look for that book after I first responded to this thread, and forgot about it.

Thanks for reminding me.
