An interesting CL ad - 'fwb roommate'..really?

So as the title implies I saw a craigslist ad that was advertising for a roommate 'fwb' - I am assuming trade for rent. Discretion a must, guy in his 40's.

So my question is...really?! I mean seriously, could that ever work? I can see some of the benefits, i.e. no strings, exclusiveness, discretion, quid-pro-quo, et, etc..

But I mean.. can that really work? Do you guys think that is a joke or serious (no, I did not reply, it just has me curious). I always thought jumping in the sheets with a roommate was a recipe for disaster.

So my question is, would anyone actually do this?

I just thought it was interesting..

Sounds bogus to me, but I did have a good friend who had a roommate who was a lesbian, and he at least got to watch sometimes, but not participate. That would be a great enough perk I think....

Eheh. I had an arrangement like that with a guy. I was hooking up with this guy, but we really didn't have any sort of dating connection. At the time I was attempting to live with my somewhat-estranged dad, he kicked me out and gave me only a week to find a new place. I was really stressed out and panicking.
The roommate-guy offered me to move into his room with him. Things weren't always perfect, but they worked for a while.
Now he's my Dom/fwb. We don't live together any more, but we where able to work through the tension.

I'm sure the guy in the add was serious. Girls (and guys) end up in bad situations and will do dumb things in desperation.

I knew a guy in college who...

lived with a divorcee off campus. He got free rent, free food, and had the run of the house. Every night he would crawl into her bed and pay for it all. I think the age difference must have been 20 years at least but they both seemed to like the arragement.

Who knows. I doubt something like that would work out long term but if both people's needs are met for awhile...well.

I didn't realize the concept was so popular. Just did a quick Google search of craigslist on roommate and fwb and found over 2000 listings, all across the country. I guess it could be a good way to save a couple thousand in rent money in these tight economic times.

If it were a guy I wanted to have sex with, it would be rent-free living with (presumably) lots of sex. I like sex, and I like lots of sex, so I'd have to wonder why he'd be willing to pay my half of the rent ($600/month?) and give me sex. I mean, the arrangement would be completely one-sided to my benefit. What would the catch be?

Keep in mind that situations like this aren't typically offered by guys who have an easy time finding partners. The "catch" would almost certainly be that you'd be dealing with a guy who was not very attractive, experienced or skilled.

Why would a guy pay to have sex? Usually because he has to.

Attractive is kind of hard to judge. Experienced and skilled can be worked on.

I am assuming since the individual is using the term roomate the property is a rental. Essentially this is prostitution, sex in exchange for consideration, and the consideration here is sex. In addition, it opens up another issue of sexual slavery. With this situation you are almost becoming indebted to the individual for allowing you to live rent free. What happens if you want to leave before the lease expires? Could he try to claim for your part of the rent if the sex was bad or if it did not occur as frequent as he expected? Without knowing more of the facts, I suspect, this type of an arrangement will be termed an illegal contract whereby he could not claim for rent from you but he could evict you. However if the landlord was not aware of the arrangement they could try to claim from you for the rent if he leaves the apartment or if you are not put on the lease then you could be evicted. For me, this would be a situation with too many risks and I would ignore the ad.

Sure it's real and if you were in NYC, you'd see a few of them on CL. I've even seen girls say that they needed a place and would be willing to do that and keep the place clean! Usually I think it's short term but rent here is sky high, so there are people looking.

By the end of the first couple of weeks, I'm pretty sure I'd have him quite experienced and skilled. There's not much I could do about his attractiveness on a purely physical level, but barring a serious deformity, extreme weight, or a horrible stench, I could easily get used to almost anything. Dimming the lights or even just closing my eyes would solve lots of problems.

I was recently looking for a place, I saw a lot of those ads myself.
Now I am not against paying for sex, trading for sex or fwb. Or sleeping with a room mate.
How ever for some reason I too thaught it was kinda weird. I had sex once with a room mate, but we had been living together for a period of time, 1-2many drinks one night, did not change any thing between us.
