LOS ANGELES — Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has acknowledged that he fathered a child with a member of his household staff, a revelation that apparently prompted wife Maria Shriver to leave the couple's home before they announced their separation last week.

"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger told the Times in a statement that also was sent to The Associated Press early Tuesday. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.

Well he wasn't prompt, but eventually he confessed, now that he's out of office.

Does that count for or against him?

When is keeping silent as bad as lying?

When you cheat on your wife with the household staff, father a child, remain silent for over a decade and only fess up after your term as governor.

So, did he remain silent so he could run for governor without the scandal over his head? Did he place his own political ambition above his responsibilities as a husband?

Both the cheating and the decade of silence counts against him.

Some random thoughts:

Our governator wasn't having safe sex, obviously-- and neither was the maid.

Of course that would be my first thought.

This could be a textbook illustration of the evobio theory that women procreate with the best genetic material they can get ahold of, and grab lesser men as husbands.

Maria Shriver knew what she was marrying when she married him. That doesn't make her situation any better right now--

This woman had been part of the staff for ten years before he knocked her up. Were they fucking all that time?

Women pick their husbands like they pick their cars, they want a nice dependable ride without any excitement or unpleasant surprises. They pick their lovers for the thrill and risk.

Someone did a study years ago about fertility and thrill. Women ovulate if theyre raped or if the male 'lover' comes with enough excitement to arouse her significantly more than usual.

As a reproductive strategy, that will guarantee a woman eighteen years of trouble and strife.

Stay responsible, ladies. Keep after that birth control, whatever method you prefer.

He was elected governator in 2003, and the baby was born long before that. Arnold was never involved in politics until he was elected. Gray Davis, the incumbent, was recalled, and Arnold was one of the vast number of those who ran to replace him if the recall passed. It was a running joke in 2003 that half the citizens in the state were running to replace Davis.

We don't know why he kept silent. There could have been very good reasons and he is not the only one who did not speak out. If I were in his situation and the mother did not want to become forever entangled in my celebrity life, it might seem very self serving, but silence is the best course.

I assume he took financial responsibility for the child. If that was done, it is no one's business, beyond their apatite for celebrity gossip.

Well, let's be fair. His adulterous relationship with the help and this child didn't, presumably effect his ability to do his job--or not do it however well or badly you felt he did his job. So really, his honesty (or lack of it) then or now is irrelevant to whether he was a good governor no matter what party he belonged to.

Now this would have made a difference if he'd run on any kind of family values or evangelical christian platform, but, again, he didn't. We might argue that the party he belonged to did run on such things, but one can belong to a political party and not support everything they stand for (witness the Log Cabin group there, gays who are Republican and, obviously, have long disagreed with their party's stance on gay rights).

So, to be fair, there seems to be nothing hypocritical in *this* republican having an adulterous affair and child with a member of the staff--it has nothing to do with us, this is between him and his wife. GRANTED that most voters, hypocrites that they are, might not see it that way, but really, if it was a mistake to put him in office, it ought to be because of his politics and what he did while in office, not because he was unfaithful to his wife. People may want to believe that marital fidelity makes a man or woman an honest and good leader, but it's ain't so. It's time we did away with that outmoded assumption.

Again, this doesn't count for those who hypocritically preach family or "christian" values, taking others to task for not keeping to them, and then get caught themselves. That's a whole other kettle-o'-adultery.

That  was over the number of people on the ballot if the recall of Davis passed. There was a porn star running, and I voted for her. I believe she came in tenth, or something like that. :)
I voted for Larry Flint. Why go for the porn star when one can go for the porn maker? ;)

Because she is a lot hotter than Flint.

If men can run on their looks, why not women?

A little help for the memory impaired. I'd certainly vote for those tits!

He wasn't really a killer robot?

His role was mouthpiece for ?? Republican forces in the state?

He was better than Davis, but we need an ass kicker in the House, who can resist the call of the cash. I know, "Good Fucking Luck with that?"

My impression was that California could have done far worse for a governor in that period.

1. He was 'Hollywood' before he was a politician and in that milieu it wouldn't be much of a surprise.
2. Maria Shriver is a Kennedy. She should be used to things like this given that family.

On 1, what surprised me was the steroids hadn't neutered him long before now.

On 2, I assume she is used to it--and has known about it for some time.

Given all the hysteria we've heard about steroids, you'd think so. However, he and Maria have four children of their own so either he didn't take as many as some people have presumed or the effects aren't as drastic as we've been led to believe.

Allegedly she just found out and that's why she moved out. I refuse to make any snarky or sarcastic comments on this aspect of the situation.
