Seonia moaned as she rubbed her feet. She wasn't used to walking for this long, but really, she only had herself to blame. She'd left the boundaries of the Shimmermist Forest a day ago, had ridden her horse furiously as she tried to put as much distance between herself and her family as possible. It wasn't that she hated them. Far from it. She just hated the tradition. There was so much more in the world, if her books even contained the tiniest bit of truth in them, than the elven village her family lived in. Yet for some reason, it was forbidden for elves to leave the borders of the woods. It was lunacy. And so, on the eve she was to enter the priesthood and begin a long, dull life as an acolyte to the Goddess of the Wood, she crept out into the night, stole a horse, and rode until it collapsed from exhaustion.
She still regretted it. The horse had served her well, up to the end when it had simply stopped long enough for her to dismount before collapsing silently. The poor thing! But its death had only strengthened Seonia's resolve. If she turned back now, the horse would have died for nothing.
But she wasn't used to walking this much. She slipped her sandal back on and leaned back against the tree she had sought shade under. The sun was too warm... her pale skin was burning, so she'd decided to wait until twilight to continue her journey. She drew her deep green traveling cloak around her flimsy elven robes to protect her skin further, then arraied her long silver hair over her neck and shoulders to do the same.
A great city of man was, according to her maps, only a few more days to the west. She had only to navigate these lightly forested hills to reach the place. There was a blank section on her map... and she had passed into that section an hour ago. She assumed it was blank simply because the cartographer had not known what was there, so she was drawing in the hills and features as she saw them, taking delight in finishing the work. She took out that map now, and began to draw in the jagged line of barren hills she had seen ahead. As she drew, her delicate pointed ears perked... a noise! Something just stepped on a twig, not thirty feet away on the other side of the hill! And... GODS! What was that pungent smell?
