I am probably going to move to NJ because it makes sense given my new job. To ease the pain of having to give up biking every where, I am going to buy a sports car. What should I get? I want one that is at least 3-4 years old (let someone else take the initial financial hit) or older if such a car ages well, and made in America. I don't know anything about cars, all I know is that I want something that looks awesome. To give an idea of my taste, if I could have/afford any car (and it were made in the US) I would drive a Lotus. Obviously that isn't going to happen. Not sure how much I can afford yet, maybe $30k?

Get a used Mustang with the high performance of V6. Even if you don't need the power it's going to be better on resale in the future. Gets decent gas mileage.

In the alternative see if you can find a Shelby edition Mustang 3 to 4 years old should be in your price range.

For straight up performance it's hard to beat any of the Dodge SRT models. But I wouldn't get one who knows what the future holds as far as support from Fiat. I would avoid anything made by government motors like the plague. They haven't made anything decent since about 1972.

Are you day drinking? Jesus.

If you move to Jersey, you might wanna give smooth103g a holler.

You see, he lives in "daily urban violence" and so, probably could use and benefit from the huge self-esteem boost that comes from mutual carpooling and riding in a successful sista's sweet whip. :D

A car is just a car...

...and if I was cursed enough to be sentenced to work/live in friggin' NJ and had to have a car to survive, I'd go for as much fun as possible with the least amount of cost. I mean, it is friggin' NJ.

For probably no more than 8-9,000, I'd get me a 10-year old Miata:

Good gas mileage, hardly any depreciation left, and insurance pretty low, too.

Im a fan of the camaro and corvette. I got to drive the new sting ray this week and im in love

A sports car only? Here in North Jersey we have horrible snow for weeks on end.

It is bad to drive in rush hour with no snow on the ground. When it snows and you don't have a 4x4 then its near impossible to get anywhere.

She specified American.

Before she gets a Miata, a Honda S2000 would be a better choice.

i have a '94 Camaro convertible i'll sell you. new top. you can give me $30k for it if you want.

I barely understand this post, will have to google!

I won't car pool. To suggest such a thing, I am indignant! Is he at least under 30?

That's pretty sweet. But I would rather buy an American car if possible. But that's a damn good choice.

Forget American, Mustang is not a sports car. Eyer is pretty spot on with the Miata, although an Audi TT cabriolet is a sweet ride. My SO loves her 2004 TT and its 4WD.

Anywhere I choose to live will have to be within a short distance of a train line to get me to work, as well as a hub of restaurants/bars/nightlife within a mile, 2 miles if it is bikeable. I can't go full on car culture. I don't want my car to dictate my life; If I have to drive occasionally, I will enjoy it dammit.

I doubt you can find a funner car to drive for the price, plus you wouldn't have to worry a bunch when it's sitting waiting for you at the train station (for the 30K you originally announced, you could buy 3.5 pristine, 10-year old Miatas).

Of course, when you grow up and grow sane and eventually find your way to the wide open spaces of the very southern part of southwest Texas...

...we'll help you find a real car:

Given your location what I would do is get on-line and look up the top 10-20 autos MOST likely to end up in a chop-shop..................then not buy one of those.

I came up with $30k by calculating the type of car note I can afford purely based on cost of living savings. I would rather reduce my monthly nut if possible, so I like the idea of something older but looks cool and fun to me.

Much as I hate to agree with eeyore, get a second hand 911.

If you don't mind used, the Pontiac Solstice is supposedly a pretty fun little car.

I can see myself in a 911. Those were really hot when I was a teen in the 80s... I imagine I would smile everytime I walk up to it.

They're gorgeous to drive. I don't know what the second hand market is like in The Great Satan, but thirty grand would buy you a mint five year old over here.

If you are going foreign under 30K and used, get an Acura NSX.
