Last night I watched, for the first time, the "talent show" American Idol. I realize this is a very popular TV show and that I will probably step on some toes by offering my opinion here.
I had been hearing about American Idol for years and finally my curiosity overcame me, so I sat down and watched. In a nutshell, I saw a dazzling light show while costumed performers/contestants screamed their songs into a Mr. Microphone. I noticed immediately that they "sang" with poor diction, and were often out of time with the music, and I say this as one who has no talent for singing or playing a musical instrument; I was actually embarrassed for the performers as I was shaking my head in disbelief.
And I sat through the sticky, ooey-gooey praise of the judges (where the fuck do these people come from?), and the phony false modesty of the contestants, while the brilliant lights flash and a (mostly invisible--and probably non-existent) studio audience cheers madly.
I don't think this is a generational thing, because I know that some of my fellow senior citizens are huge fans of this show.
Keeping the show's popularity in mind, I wonder if it is just me against the world, or if there are others whose opinion is similar to mine?
