Last night I watched, for the first time, the "talent show" American Idol. I realize this is a very popular TV show and that I will probably step on some toes by offering my opinion here.

I had been hearing about American Idol for years and finally my curiosity overcame me, so I sat down and watched. In a nutshell, I saw a dazzling light show while costumed performers/contestants screamed their songs into a Mr. Microphone. I noticed immediately that they "sang" with poor diction, and were often out of time with the music, and I say this as one who has no talent for singing or playing a musical instrument; I was actually embarrassed for the performers as I was shaking my head in disbelief.

And I sat through the sticky, ooey-gooey praise of the judges (where the fuck do these people come from?), and the phony false modesty of the contestants, while the brilliant lights flash and a (mostly invisible--and probably non-existent) studio audience cheers madly.

I don't think this is a generational thing, because I know that some of my fellow senior citizens are huge fans of this show.

Keeping the show's popularity in mind, I wonder if it is just me against the world, or if there are others whose opinion is similar to mine?

I think the contestants this year are miles better than the ones of the past and are doing a great job.

Excuse me, but why did you post this on the author's page? You would have received a much better response under 'general'.

But - out of all the contestants in the past 9 years, only a handful had made anything out of thier "Idol' status. Certainly, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Doughtry, and that cute blonde country singer. The runner up from season 5 now regularly appears on TV.

But, this year, the talent is good. Pia, who was eliminated last week is already busy with her first release album, and she will not be the only one who goes straight to the recording studio. Only time will tell if anything comes out of their efforts.

You should realize that AI is geared toward the younger generation, but not only do I enjoy it, but so does my 84 year old mother. It has a very high viewership, and an even greater following on the internet.

I'm not saying you are out of touch with America, but perhaps you are a little out of touch with American youth, and the current 'popular' music.

On the other hand, I also enjoy dancing with the stars.
