False. The civil rights acts of 1964-5 were passed by a Democratic Congress and signed by a Democratic president. Only three presidents have ever vetoed civil rights bills, and they were all Republicans (Andrew Johnson, Reagan, and Bush Sr.).

No I don't, because that is not what happened. Every time the Dems nominated a candidate who supported civil rights, the Dixiecrats split off. (If you're thinking of Strom Thurmond in 1948, "Dixiecrat" was just a slang term for his 3rd party. The official title was "States Rights Democrat".)

Not only is that false, it wouldn't make any sense if it were true. When LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act, he said - optimistically as it turned out - he had ceded the South to the Republicans for a generation. Turns out it was at least two generations. If we were going to "use race as a weapon", it would have made far more sense to align ourselves with whites. Which, of course, is exactly why the Republicans have done just that since 1968.

Look at the map, score_keeper. The once solid-blue South turned solid-red at exactly the same time the parties switched places on racial issues. That is no coincidence. And it certainly isn't bullshit. The numbers don't lie.
