Am I the only one who reads all the categories?

I'm really new to this site but the two stories I've written are in different categories (BDSM and Loving Wives) and have received a wide disparity in the number of responses.
I, along with everyone else probably, write for response. Which category are people paying the most attention to? I know a lot of people like incest, but lets face it, that's really nasty (Oedipus Rex was a tragedy for a reason). So my question is: does a good sex adventure transcend genre?

No, not me:) , I write for myself but I do enjoy positive feedback (I am human:) )when it comes.

I try to read a sample of the New stories but I supppose I am prejudiced against certain genres and won't venture there, for example, incest.

I'm sure there are people who feel the same about the BDSM and Lesbian categories. Telle est la vie.

I read anything that catches my eye. I'm partial to the fantasy realm, which means I write a lot of non-human stuff, but I'll read anything in any category, including incest. The only criteria I really have is that it has to have a good storyline to go along with everything else. I'm bored with contrived 'boy sees girl so now boy will fuck girl' plots. I outgrew that in my teens. I prefer stories with tension, intrigue, and an ending that is twisty. If the story revolves around incest, then so be it. If it revolves around something I particulary dislike, it had better be a damned good plot to keep me reading.

I read anything that flips my lid!

I read stories that turn me on, flip my lid, rock my
world, and that grabs my attention! On Literotica,
it helps to keep an **OPEN MIND** due to the
very many categories out there......sure, there are
those who enjoy stories in Incest, those who get
off by Gay/Lesbian stories.....those who get turned
on by Erotic Couplings, etc. etc. etc........

I also write primarily for my own pleasure. It is like doing crosswords, it is a solitary pleasure with the possibility of occasional rewards.

When I write, I write a story. If it pleases me enough to submit, then I find a category invented by the deities of this site into which it fits. Some stories don't really fit into any category - some of the Halloween ones will be cross-category. As a perceptive critic said elsewhere (with no originality) some of my worst are necrophilia, bestiality and sadism mixed - flogging a dead horse.

Sorry, I can't resist an old joke:
"Oedipus, Schmoedipus, what does it matter as long as he loves his mother?"

Good answers. My problem with categorization is that my stories fit a great many of the categories listed. The first story I submitted http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=24805 I placed under BDSM when it could have been Non-Consent, Interracial, of Group Sex. The reason I asked the question of what's best was to figure out how I can get more reads, more opinion, more REAL criticism (I hated your story because....), and improve my stories beyond what I personally think is hot or sexy or fun.

I don't want to turn this into another incest is bad / incest is good thread, there are already plenty of those. But the long term effects of Incest are devastating, not pleasurable. INCEST ALMOST NEVER BEGINS AFTER 18. Why don't we put in a category and call it rape? Or child sex? Those are somebody's fantasies too. Here's a clue, if you can put the word "victim" or "survivor" at the end of a category it's probably stroke material for someone doing a nickel or dime in the state penn.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I'll keep them under advisement.

I agree that many of the incest stories gloss over the fact that incest is so often the exploitation of children, but I have read a few incest stories that deal with the consequences, and were quite interesting. Now, how successful an erotic story can be in dealing with a serious issue like that, I don't know. Wish I could remember the one story I read, it was very good, not really sexual...I'll post it if I can think of it.

All the characters in Literotica stories have to be 18 and over, so at least there aren't stories about kids. In other posts about the popularity of incest stories the consensus seems to be that they're read so much because of the taboo, it's not something that happens too often (consensual incest, I mean) and people are curious.

A good story is a good story. I'm not much into fantasy, or BDSM, but if it's well-done, it doesn't really matter. I might enjoy stories that push my particular buttons more than others, but it's nice to be surprised (and excited) but something you didn't know was out there.

Just read one of your stories...

Your best bet is to do research on your own...it's simple, just go onto the site and check the categories it falls under by using the toplists, which ever is showing the most reads in the top stories is probably the best to choose. I the case you represented there, Group Sex would probably have been your best bet.

I just read the story you linked to, and it was pretty good, it actually focused more on style than sex...uncommon here. Keep it up!

As far as the incest stories go, many people have fantasies that overlook the reality of what it implicates...but the truth is, every fantasy overlooks things like that...as long as they remain fantasies, let it go...I've read a few incest ones and they weren't too bad, eventhough I have no interest in it myself...of course, were I related to Jennifer Love Hewitt, that might be a little different...

Ooops, sorry

didn't hit the stop button in time on my browser...apologies...

I, along with everyone else probably, write for response.

I've run several different websites and the most difficult thing to do is get people to respond, commit themselves to to the little effort required to say something about what they've just read or seen. Writing for response will take you down the dark path of writing to get ANY response, good or bad.

Does a good sex adventure transcend genre?

Probably, but you have to look at your audience. There are activities described in stories posted here that don't appeal to everyone, the categories help the reader avoid topics they might find less than erotic and find topics that maximizes their reading pleasure.

There are all time GREAT writers of - Henry Miller, Anais Nin, D.H. Lawrence - but if you were to break down any one of their books, those sections would fall into categories outlined here. Taken as a whole, they still fall into a category, Novels.

Fundamentally, all good writing, if truly good, exists above genre and becomes literature. Just don't trust Barnes and Noble's or Border's definition because they make their choices on market trends.

< I, along with everyone else probably, write for response. >

I'm with Nessus and some of the others. I write for me. Always have, always will.

Occasionally, I'll write for my lover. Even after a break-up those works stay private between the two of us. If I write something for my love and he says to put it up, I do.

I still write for me...

target audience

I write not only for myself, but for others......for
others to be seduced by the power of the written
word.........

I intend to be published someday.....and in terms
of stories, poems, etc......it is important to grab
your target audience. It is the same here on Literotica....
the target audience on here derives
pleasure by reading hot writings from individuals
of diverse backgrounds......and their own tastes
and pleasures.......

I commend you for commiting to the goal of writing
a story for every category on the site, but it is no
overnight job! best of luck!

I've done writing for publication. That's a college course and something I actually went through. Market research, guideline requests, writing something that fits, submision, rejection, submission, rejection and more rejection

I don't mind rejection if it has 3 or 4 words on it. Their stupid check the box rejection slips drove me batty. I'd re-request guidelines to make sure nothing changed.

If I don't write for me... If I don't enjoy the process... My work and the audience suffer.

to each their own.....

Rrrosyn......
I hear you in regards to enjoying the writing process
for oneself, and for others........I took a writing
for publication course last fall thru Adult Ed. program,
and even before i took the course I know that getting
published is very competitive these days, and a lot
of getting the word out on one's book is
marketing! Its crazy!

bygones

Yes. My sister thrives in marketing classes. I had to work on that aspect of the course.

The fact that I was taking Genre Analysis at the same time helped.

I don't have high ambitions of a book. Got the groundwork and stuff, but it won't flow. I am trying to figure out who I want to please. Parts that are designed to lure and keep the reader are suffering. Parts I enjoy, visualization, character detail, I love and they come out great.

lure the reader in!

I like that! Luring the reader in with hot details and words.......a
definite! Visual aspects in erotic stories are important.....seeing
the words on the paper or screen makes one (at least me)
close their eyes and imagine the action happening as if
there was a real-live movie going on..........

I know not everyone wants to write a book.....for many,
just writing stores for fun makes them happy :)

Shorts

Short stories also offer instant gratification, for both writer and reader. Visualization and detail work in erotica. They don't do so well in High Fantasy. Well known authors get away with it all the time. I'll never know why.

instant gratification......

instant gratification works for me........details, details,
details that work are the ones that grab visually.......!

Sated

I am sure there are few people here who are opposed to instant gratification. LMAO

Nite. :)

I have two incest stories, one, Lusty Blue Eyes has tons of reads compared to the other, An Acidic Tiger. One is happy happy joy joy incest, the other is what real incest looks like. It's a small wonder to me that happy joy incest has a better score than the ugly truth, even though, in my opinion, the ugly truth is better written.

I read Killer Muffin's stories and have to say they were very well executed.

What does it say about us as humans in Western society that incest is such a popular fantasy?

Also, getting back to my original question, does a really well done story go beyond the genre it's written in?

I don't think I could ever get into the trek fantasy thing, no matter how well written. Just an opinion.

beyond the genre, as in "The Godfather." Is it just a great mob movie or does it work so well as to defy the limitation of category?
