Am I missing something?

Apparently, there's a lot of drama around the LW category that I am just completely ignorant of. I've got several ideas for potential writings that might go into this category, but I'd really love to know what exactly I'm signing up for should I embark on that particular venture.

It's high views, low scores, and nasty commentary. There are opposing camps of readers in the category who think each other's kinks are polluting the category with filth, and do their level best to chase out the writers distributing said filth.

There's more than circumstantial evidence that some will take out their frustrations on your entire catalog as well. So all your work could take splash damage.

Go to the category Hub page and take a look around. Look at a few with a lot of comments, and you'll see what you're potentially getting into.

Wouldn't we all?

The category has a higher troll/keep to my specific kinks contingent than others and some authors trip their sensors, usually ending in threatening comments, catalog vote bombing, weird ramblings on "women and their place," etc.

If there is an expectation/bar you need met to make the endeavor fruitful, best not bother.

Those who write well in the category write on their own terms and their scores are hardly reflective of the underlying writing talent.

Either your idea appeals to you enough to not be swayed by (likely) bad outcomes so you write it anyway or you are best served trying tamer fanbases.

Alright, so I just took your advice, and now I feel like I need to bleach my eyes. Quick question, where does Mind Control fall into this category of weird awfulness because that's where my next story is going, and I just want to know in case I need to invest in a splash guard.

You can find ways to avoid the LW category. Nearly every story here could go under multiple categories. The site owner seems understanding of the apprehension of putting anything into that category, if one would rather not. (I have one story up and it would have fit best into LW, but I'd rather not publish at all than publish there. So into Anal it went!)

@alohadave I will one hundred percent take mellow consent critics to what I was just exposed to. That felt like I just got airdropped into a Reddit debate forum. Like, I feel violated by what I just saw. I'm only partially exaggerating when I say the comments section I just scrolled through was only slightly less toxic than Chernobyl. Like, where are the freaking liquidators? Why is no one doing anything about this chemical spill?

They really should change the description for the LW catagory to "Abandon hope, ye who enter here."
The Bible might be of some use. Psalm 23.4: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

Or Lord Tennyson, regarding the Crimean War, in which the British had some tough going. ā€œ 'Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!' he said. Into the valley of Death rode the six hundred."

It's pretty mellow. You may see a few commenters who like to complain about consent, but they troll everyone equally.
I guess it varies somewhat. I've only posted there twice, and that was some time ago. The first one had more negative reactions. Since the second story was a sequel, their interest seemed to drop.

Or Tolkien, of course:

"The way is shut.
It was made by those who are Dead, and the Dead keep it, until the time comes.
The way is shut."

All of the above. I wouldn't go in there with Kevlar and Nomex layered, side order of bio suit, but some writers like it and do well.

The issue of it leaking into your other stories is common enough that I suspect there's some truth to it. One way around that is to publish LW tales under a different nom-de-plume.

Good luck either way.

The dead can keep it. I'm taking Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli and we are finding another way to deal with the orcs.

I wouldn’t flee without due consideration. Some LW stories wind up doing very well. For instance, Tex Tall Tale’s The Accidental Nudist Cabin pulled in a solid 4.76 and almost 3 million reads (far more than anything I’ve ever submitted). dtiverson’s The Short Happy Life of Island Bill earned a 4.78 with 350,000 reads and The Old Way by SW_MO_Hermit rocked a solid 4.77 with a quarter million reads. Those are impressive results by any yardstick.

Mind control readers are a little harsher than average on the site. Erotic Horror is the same way. But that's usually scores only. If anything, I'd say they're more inclined to use the scale than the standard 1 or 5 approach that dominates the rest of the site. I haven't noticed any out of the ordinary levels of nasty commentary.

You might consider reading these two threads;

  1. What I learned from publishing a Loving Wives story
  2. What I learned from publishing a second Loving Wives story
There is some scaremongering about the category. It is possible to publish in it without suffering blowback, but - as illustrated in the two threads - you need to be aware of how the category works. If you blunder in (as I did), you can get mauled.

I don’t write in it now, mostly as it’s not really my kink.
