Alts.

I dislike ALTs....I like them a whole LOT

I have read posts by ALTs, I have read the directory thread where some people came out about their ALTs. I was really disappointed to see some of them, I was hurt when I saw friends with them that I didnt know. It bothered me to the point that I stopped talking to some of those people.

If you consider someone a friend.... and you choose not to tell them that you have an ALT.... how close is that friendship, how close are you really?

See unfortunately I call that a lie by omission. That is what I see it as, that is how I feel about it.... as disturbing as that truly is.

I think we should put up a poll... who agrees with JoeW most of the time? Think we'd get accurate results? ;)

Even if I wanted to I couldn't answer that accurately, as I don't know enough of his views.

I don't get as upset with him as some people around here seem to. There are a few who take every opportunity to jump down on him no matter what he actually said, twisting his words around trying to make him look like an ass (when all he did was say something half-ass-ish at worst).

I don't understand that kind of hatred. It is above and beyond what is called for.

I had to do the "changing name due to personal circumstances" thing for awhile and became LadyInDisguise. I pmed people I considered friends and let them know though. After things cooled down, I was able to re-register with this name, which was a good thing because I never felt "at home" with Lady. Vix was created as an alt for Survivor because things the previous year had gotten kind of heated and I feared retaliation if I wrote under this name. I kept it mostly a secret for awhile, but I didn't post very often under that name. By the time the middle of that year rolled around, most people knew that Vix was me. I continue to write under that name because it's the one with the biggest fan base.

I do understand posting under a different name with no one knowing the two were one and the same. Sometimes, you feel like you need to re-invent yourself. I've considered doing it myself at one time or another just as an experiment to see if said alt would be better received/more popular than me as Crim.

For the case of those who create a number of different personas and screen names for posting on the boards ... its not something I could see myself doing. Personally, I don't think I'd have the energy to keep up two "distinct" personalities, backstories, sets of idiosyncrasies, etc. Besides, deception is deception no matter what you call it.

For writing ... I look at it as pen names rather than alts. No harm, no foul.

Oh, but most /do/, you'd be suprised what kind of PM's a guy gets around here--it's adorable that you think otherwise, though.

Secret agreement!

Nifty.

Sometimes, it's all people are comfortable with around here--far be it from me to deny appreciation for it.
Maybe they should all make alts to come out and agree with you.
