Lilly kicked the front door to her apartment shut behind her with her foot, juggling a large box in her hands as well as her bag. The bag was quickly tossed aside, her attention focused on large cardboard box she held. She was honestly surprised that the delivery man had just left it sitting on her doorstep like that – she thought she'd have had to sign for something like this, but there was nothing on the outside to indicate that it was anything of particular importance, just her own address and a discreet return address. At least she hadn't missed getting it because she was at her final. Now, though, she was done with the semester and free for winter break, with a new game to try out. This one promised to be a little different than the run of the mill shooter or rpg, though.
Lilly was rather average in height, with a lean frame, brunette hair, and enough curves in the right places that she could draw plenty of glances when she wanted to. She was dressed in layers to ward off the cold, but as she made her way to her room she discarded her coat and boots. She shut the door so her rather overly social roommate would be sure not to bother her when she got home from work in a few hours. Then she turned on her computer, sitting the box on her desk and starting to open the package. She felt an odd flush of excitement, still feeling slightly flushed both from her walk home through the cold air, and a little thrill of anticipation about what was in the box. “The most immersive and realistic VR experience you've ever known – with singleplayer, local, or online multiplayer modes”, the online marketing had said. She'd seen the demo videos, read about the game... and now she and another friend of hers had been lucky enough to be chosen as of the first beta testers. She'd pre-downloaded the software two nights ago... but now, it was here. Somehow it finally seemed real, sitting here in her bedroom.
She unboxed each piece and set them out her desk... the helmet, housing the main processor and the neural interface. The ankle and wrist motion trackers, wireless and hardly looking like much more than some odd looking bracelets. The wireless toys, with their “cybersensitive input and feedback” capabilities...she connected the helmet to her computer and pressed a button, lighting it up. The set-up began, Lilly watched idly as the bar began to fill across, the light of the computer in her dim room reflecting in her blue eyes.
She wasn't totally sure she bought into all the hype, but she had to admit she was looking forward to trying it out... Especially because she had a certain friend to play along with... Maybe it would be everything it was hyped up to be. At least it would be a way to have a little fun... Lilly had always had a playful adventurous streak, though she didn't let most people see how adventurous. But her friend was another story, she had let him see her wild side a time or two before...
She opened up a chat on her computer while she waited, checking his status and seeing that it was idle.
“Hey. Mine came today. I'm setting it up now,” she typed quickly and hit enter, waiting to see if he would respond.
