I like "chance encounter" stories where two strangers find themsleves alone and stuff happens. Trouble is, every time I try to write one, I can't think of an original setting.

Have any of you read or written a "chance encounter" story with an exciting, original setting?

Specifically, NOT

* Stuck in a elevator
* Repairman/housewife
* Intruder/Housewife
* Private Tutor
* Broken Down in Desert
* Shipwrecked
* Kept after School

Not that the above settings make for bad stories, it's just that they may be a little overused.

It's not from a story but I think a story where two mothers (of children in the same class) meet. Like on a feild trip with the childs class where the parent have the option to come along. A museum or something.

SJ, how about competitors at a music contest of some kind. One's in the practice room, the other accidentally walks in, they enjoy each other's...music, among other things.

That's just off the top of my head...I'll try to think of some others.

Films come to mind especially. Like "Magnolia" or "Grand Canyon", or lots of Altman.

Otherwise, people meeting 'round accidents (any kind), e.g., at hospital (like the man and girl in coma in "Talk to Her"), or at the police station.

Or seeing someone you slightly knew long ago suddenly on the front page of a newspaper.

Or a juror falling for a lawyer, judge, defendent?

A store Santa falls for the mother of one of the kids in line.

You're trying to buy lingerie for your gf and end up going for the the sales clerk.

I like the school trip. I did that with my sons school a few months ago at the British Museum in London. Really. Gosh, that place would have been great for a quick fuck. Of course we would have had to ditch the ten twelve-year-olds we were supposed to be responsible for...

The music one also brings back memories of the little smoke-filled rooms littered with beer cans I used to wait in when I was playing music. Unfortunately, I played Jazz. No damn women. After a gig, a couple of nerds might come up to me and ask what scale was I playing in the last song or whether I'd heard the latest Herbie Hancock album. Nice guys, usually. Wouldn't want to fuck em, though...

I like those, P. But the "privacy" element is the key thing. The people have to find themsleves suddenly alone together at or near the beginning of the story.

Since my life is rather weirdly interesting - I have had chance encounters, but you need to guess which of the following are true:

1) business conference, strange tension between the lecturer and the attendee, in alley out back. ;)

2) Walking down the street and not being able to pass someone because the attraction is way too much, and ending up at their house for the rest of the afternoon. Could easily be in the bushes though. ;)

3) at a photoshoot could be photographer/art director/model/ assistant, make-up artist/ stylist - all - or your choice. ;)

4) Doctor/patient - BREAKS all the rules ;)

5) going in for finger prints and being in the room alone with the officer ;)

6) Waitress in an upscale restauraunt, a patron of the encounter is with a date. ;)

7) online . . . ;)

8) two people fighting for a parking spot at a Walmart, anger leads to . . . . ;)

9) person about to commit suicide, sits beside you on streetcar, and cries on your shoulder, and you go for a pity fuck. Life is better. :)

OK thats all i can come up with - take one or leave them all.

Subway car or train car

Car dealer and a test ride.

Department store stockroom

opera box or behind the scene setting up scenery

internet cafe where they both are but find out later.

music store

monster truck show on sunday...

Walking into the wrong bogs.

Walking into the right bogs.

Flying lessons (chocolate biscuits?)

Lone cleaner after 5 o'clock at the office.

Porter with MD patient in wheelchair in x-ray room waiting for technician. (Don't ask me why she has muscular dystrophy)

Rock critic and ageing groupie in ship after the controls have been set for the heart of the sun.

MacD's store room while business is slow.

I'VE GOT IT!

On a three hour cruise, a sudden storm blows a small charter boat off course. It wrecks on the shore of a lonely island. The passengers might include a rich couple, a movie star, a professor, a perky girl plus a bumbling captain and his dim-witted crewman.

Just a thought.

Joe,

Have you ever considered competitors in a single person event like figure skating? Each competitor or pair has the ice to themselves for a specified amount of time to work on their routine. The next skater with ice time is usually there early, in case the person scheduled ahead cannot make it for some reason. That gives you loads of options. The skater could meet & be stuck for a half hour 45 minutes with a fan, promoter, housekeeping person, security person etc. while the person with icetime is on the ice.

Another option could be an open house. Lets say two people just happened to stop in to view the house at the same time. I know they still do open houses in some places, you generally stop in at the little trailer that serves as an office for the workers in a new development, pick up a key, sign some waivers and go view the unit at your lesiure.

The possibilities are really bounded only by how mouch time you want to put into setting it up.
