WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Coalition aircraft attacked targets on an Iraqi air base Thursday southwest of Baghdad, the U.S. Central Command said.

The coalition response came after Iraqi forces fired anti-aircraft artillery at coalition jets patrolling the southern no-fly zone of that country, a Pentagon official said.

The official said that in two different strikes, 12 coalition aircraft -- four U.S. Air Force F-15s, four British fighter jets and four U.S. Navy F-18s from the USS George Washington -- were used to drop more than 20 precision-guided bombs on a military airfield known as Rutvah, about 240 miles west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Two to three separate targets on the airbase were pinpointed for destruction. A command center, an air defense radar site and a cable repeater were among those targets, the official said.
This is the first time in more than a year that U.S. Navy fighters have been used in an air strike in Operation Southern Watch, Navy officials said.

Since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom, U.S. carriers have been tied up with operations in Afghanistan and have not been able to dedicate aircraft for Operation Southern Watch while in the Arabian Sea.

At the time of the strike, the George Washington was in the Persian Gulf, a typical placement of an aircraft carrier based in the Central Command region, the Navy official said.

Military officials could not specify why Navy aircraft were used during this latest strike.

U.S. and allied forces have patrolled no-fly zones in both southern and northern Iraq since the end of the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Coalition policy is to strike in self-defense if Iraqi air defense facilities target or fire at allied aircraft.

The U.S. Central Command said that the Iraqis have fired on coalition aircraft more than 130 times so far this year.

Now do you consider this first strike of the new war ?
I always thought 9/11/03 would be the D-day.

Rex :rose:

they've been doing it for years.
it's only news this time because of the war talk.
the military said that this is routine. Just with more planes.
slow news day, I guess.

and possibly just a show of force by Dubya to show Saddam he can blow up a tent with a 20 million dollar bomb at freakin will.

More planes because more response is wanted?

Probably just priming for 9/11.

What everyone said above. It's been happening weekly since the No Fly Zone was established (not to be confused with the Infield Fly Rule, which is older). You're just hearing about this now?

Very recently, yesterday, or the day before, I read about Saddam's drone aircraft program. Rumor had it since Desert Storm (and confirmed by Saddam's many loyal defectors) that he has a fleet of drone planes equiped like crop-dusters to spread biologicals...

Photo recon od a recent airstrike on a remote hanger revealed the location of these drones...

Bring it on.

Doesn't it go....

nothing, absolutely nothing....

It's good enough to ensure the band a place in history appearantly

Maybe it was earlier this morning -- like when I posted a link here: http://www.literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=2627147#post2627147

Of course since I don't have a membership at the Washington Post, you may have seen it there before it was allowed inother papers.

The drones aren't what is really scary in that story -- it's the two 500 gallon drop tank conversions for Iraq'a supersonic Mirage F-1's that put Isreal's major cities about eight minutes away from being "crop-dusted."

:D

The band!

Long after Viet Nam is a mere footnote in history, I fear people will STILL be doing WAR Uhn, What is it good for?

Even Jacky Chan's doin' it for Buddha's sake!

Same with Buffalo Springfield...

lol...those damn liberal entertainers!!!

These actions have been going on for ten years. It is nothing new. Nothing at all.

As for the Navy jets? IMO, training.

These kinds of training opportunities don't come along every day. Why not have your troops out there taking advantage of it? Amply covered by other jets of course.

Are you ready to rumbllllllllllllllllle??

Does anyone else feel the heat being turned up? Maybe it's just wishful thinking...

The raid appeared to be a prelude to the type of special forces operations that would have to begin weeks before a possible American-led war. It was launched two days before a war summit between President George W Bush and Tony Blair in America.

The Prime Minister promised that Britain would be alongside the Americans "when the shooting starts".

The raid seemed designed to destroy air defences to allow easy access for special forces helicopters to fly into Iraq via Jordan or Saudi Arabia to hunt down Scud missiles before a possible war within the next few months.

Although only 12 aircraft dropped precision-guided bombs on to the H3 airfield, 240 miles west of Baghdad and close to Jordan, many support aircraft took part.

The strikes were carried out by nine American F15 Strike Eagles and three RAF Tornado GR4 ground attack aircraft flying from Kuwait.

RAF Tornados also took part in the reconnaissance. American central command refused to go into detail about the number of aircraft involved in the raid.

The attack on what the American central command described as an "air defence command and control facility" was the first time that a target in western Iraq had been attacked during the patrols of the southern no-fly zone.

Until yesterday, all strikes had been against air defence sites in the south, around Basra, Amara, Nassairya and Baghdad.

Central command said it was still assessing the damage caused by the attack. If the air defence installation was not destroyed, a second raid is expected.

As well as blinding Iraqi radar to any special forces helicopters, the loss of the H3 installation would allow allied aircraft mounting major raids on Iraq a trouble-free route into the country.

In a further sign that America was preparing for war, a Pentagon official confirmed that heavy armour, ammunition and other equipment had been moved to Kuwait from huge stores in Qatar.

Thomas White, the army secretary, said: "We have done a lot with pre-positioned stocks in the Gulf, making sure that they are in the right spot to support whatever the president wants to do."

Mr Bush, speaking in Louisville, Kentucky, said that, besides having talks with Mr Blair, he would be meeting the leaders of France, Russia, China and Canada over the next few days. He would tell them that "history has called us into action" to oust Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq.

He said he was looking forward to the talks, but suggested that the US could do the job on its own if need be.

"I am a patient man," he said. "I've got tools; we've got tools at our disposal. We cannot let the world's worst leaders blackmail, threaten, hold freedom-loving nations hostage with the world's worst weapons."

Peace through Superior Firepower.

Why weren't those Navy planes doing their "training" over Afghanistan like they have been for the last year?

Carier Air Groups don't normally engage in "training" on deployment -- they go through a deployment specific training cycle just prior to going to sea and you just don't fly off carriers if you're not fully trained.

Just supposition on my part. Perhaps they were in the area and decided to go "play"?

The upshot is that I don't think it's anything major or noteworthy.

Just another violation of UN sanctions and conditions. And he has not yet finished vilolating UN sanctions and conditions!

He'll never finish to violate until he's off this planet me thinks.
About time to show him something about respect.
