Alleged Homeland Security Department Shutdown

And if the S&P downgrades US credit rating again and the DJIA plummets, that's just the cost of doing business, right?

The Mitch and Boner show, hottest ticket in town. What a couple of maroons.

Abolish it. It was a dumb idea. None of the agencies that were supposed to be brought together under its umbrella share with it, much less each-other. It is just another wasted layer of bureaucracy.

The only portion that has any use at all is whatever they calling La Migra these days. Since this administration has castrated La Migra, they should all simply be furloughed with pay until such time as an administration decides it wants to control the border with the evil Canadians.

All that has happened is we've created an ineffective bureaucracy of immense size and scope.

Ever new agency, see also Education and Energy are given big buildings to fill and huge budgets to make them the equal of all the other bloated departments.

Inevitably, that just becomes ridiculous.

The GSA's whole existence is to save the country money on purchases and to manage the Real Estate and assets of the Government. The can't even spend all the money shoveled to them, so they waste it so the gravy train is not curtailed.

Madness, all of it.

The DHS is mostly merely central management for several agencies that already existed, before 9/11, under different departments; its creation was just a reorganization, and did not involve any great expansion of government powers or functions, and not much expansion of government personnel. IIRC, it was done because lack of coordination between different security agencies was seen (rightly or wrongly) as one of the things that allowed 9/11 to happen.

That does not mean DHS is effective and does not mean it is not dangerous, but we need to keep those questions in their proper perspective.

Since this administration has castrated La Migra . . .

 Once again:

HIDALGO, Texas — As Congress debates border funding and governors demand more aid to curb illegal immigration and other problems, government records show that taxpayers have spent $90 billion over 10 years to secure the US-Mexican border.

The Associated Press tallied the combined costs using White House budgets, reports obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests, and congressional transcripts.

Among the expenses:

■ Deployment of 1,200 National Guard soldiers for one year: $110 million

■ One rail cargo X-ray screening machine: $1.75 million

■ Average annual salary of a Customs and Border Protection officer: $75,000

■ Cost of a drug-searching dog: $4,500

For taxpayers footing these bills, the returns have been mixed: fewer illegal immigrants but little impact on the terrorism issue, and no stoppage of the drug supply, officials said.

So: The border has not been secured against drug smuggling -- but, WRT illegal immigrants, there has been some improvement. More importantly, after spending all that money on it, obviously the border is already as secure as it is ever going to get. Everything that reasonably can be done is being done. (No, a wall stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific is not a reasonable thing.)

its failed, its dysfunctional.

What actual failures can you name? The point of creating DHS was to stop terrorism on U.S. soil, and there has not been much since 9/11.

Here's the problem:

The order of succession for the Secretary of Homeland Security is as follows:

I suppose every department has an order-of-succession just as lengthy. What's your point?

Then get the fuck outta here, lazy bug fucker.

Can you do anything other than talk like miles?

I don't take orders from an impotent old man.. I've already told you both that.. So myob unless I ring your bell.

You do realize that is not a valid defense of DHS? I carry a rock with me and I've never been attacked by a tiger so therefore the rock is protecting me.

The fact that 9/11 occurred under a Republican administration and it was the same administration who then increased the size of government to compensate for its failure to protect us does justify not this bogus agency. There was a much easier way to get coordination which was to TALK to each other. Designate a liaison office or something similar, or better yet have inter-agency pow wows, discuss things.

Instead, the the most anti-conservative method was found which was to increase the size and cost of government while providing no useful return on investment.

I know it pains you so, being of lesser intelligence, but no.

Why did you continually ignore requests for any proof whatsoever?

I read your posts.. Trust me, you're not more intelligent. Lately, you're barely above neverendingderp.

Anyone who deals with it will tell you it's too fucking big to function. It's dysfunctional with overlapping authority, non-communication between agencies and departments of agencies, ineffectual management. It's a colossal boondoggle, a perfect example of institutional overreaction. It's an institutional ball of string that no one can follow and make sense of.

What would you do, then, dissolve DHS and put all its agencies back under the departments where they were before DHS was created, after they've had 13 years of growing accustomed to working under DHS? Seems like it would be less trouble to leave DHS in place and try to fix the problems you speak of; at least the concept was sound.
