All Together Now

This is England's official song for Euro 2004, and I have to admit, it's pretty classy. It's not quite up there with "Three Lions", but it's a good one to chant on the terraces.

It's by The Farm and is a remake of their own song. It's the kind of tune that brings a lump to yer throat.

Love it?

Hate it?

Don't know what the fuck I'm on about?

What's your favourite "footie" song?

What about other countries. How do yours stand up?

Lou - singing "Vindaloo" again. :p

I haven't heard yours, Lou, so I can't say anything. Here is a little bit of ours (non-official): Será demais pedir a taça?

I don't know if there is an official song, but probably is. I just haven't heard it yet.

And the best footie song ever is our national anthem. Wait 'til you hear a whole stadium singing it. :D ;)

Germany had a couple of tries at an official song but they are usually pretty bad.
Don't really know about this year's EM but I think after a huge dissapointment with the official song 'Running with a dream' for the last EM they won't have one.

I have to say that sometimes I like the official songs made by the organisers for the event.
But some favourites for football events came from other sources as you mentioned Lightning Seeds with Football's coming home. It was a huge succes over here as well. (Even though we germans didn't look too good in their video)
So there are some songs that are always a classic:
- Football's Coming Home by Lightning seeds
- Ready To Go by Republica (was popular here during last WM in some commercials)
- We Are The Champions by Queen (of course)
- We Will Rock You by Queen
- Don't Look Back In Anger by Oasis (EM '96 song for a german tv station)

I'm pretty sure german tv stations that cover the EM will have songs again, i'll look forward to them.

Oh and I have to say that I am pretty crazy about national anthems as well. I even sing along those that I know the lyrics of. :)

Cool song! Even though I didn't understand a word of it. ;)

I look forward to hearing your national anthem sung in the stadium. If our two teams do meet, I'm sure our fans will try to drown them out with "Three Lions" or the music from the Great Escape. :D

I've been searching and searching for the lyrics to All Together Now and all I can find is the original lyrics from the song released in 1990. Anyway, it is a very apt song, The Farm's Peter Hooton said it's an honour to have the song – originally written about a game of football between British and German soldiers on No Man's Land on Christmas Day during World War One – used for the England campaign. The new version was re-mixed by Radio 1's DJ Spoony.

If I find a sample of the song, or even the lyrics, I'll post them here.

Lou

Wait for the remix by DJ Snoopy :D

Why do our countries have so much trouble in terms of football, Lou ? Do you have any idea ? Just because we beat you in your home tournament ?

Some very good choices there, Snoop!

I love the Lightening Seeds song and it always sends a chill down my spine when I hear the crowds sing it in a stadium.

Here's a little anecdote about the England - Germany match of Euro '96. I was giving birth to my eldest daughter during it! We had a radio in the delivery room and I listened to the whole thing during labour. When Gareth Southgate missed the final penatly I got quite hysterical and the midwife had to try and calm me down. She was also rather shocked by some of the names I called Southgate. :D

After the match finished the station played "Three Lions" (as we call it), and that song always brings back some huge emotions and mixed feelings for me.

Isn't it amazing how songs can do that?

My daughter was born 20 minutes after the end of the match. :)

On our part, it's usually in jest. ;)

I think it is the fact that, since 1966, Germany had always been England's nemesis in the big football tournaments (as well as flippin' Argentina). We always seemed to come a cropper against Germany. But, we broke that curse when we beat you 5-1 in your own country, and then went on to beat you in the World Cup qualifying round.

We no longer fear you! France is another matter...

Lou - who loves Germans really (especially you).

And ever will be ... :D ... If our teams meet, England will just have another exit from a big tournament. Must be about 40 years, since England won its last title right? :D :D Sorry, but this is just too good an opportunity to pick on you :D

Bloodyfuckingcuntybastard!!!!

Love you really!

Nah, we don't fear you. BRING IT ON!!!

If we'd managed to have gotten passed Brazil in the last world cup (which we almost did), we would've ultimately met you in the final, and wiped the floor with your sorry arses. But, we didn't, so it's a moot point. :p

Everything I do say, with regard to our "rivalry" really is in jest. :D

I knew there was something behind that well-mannered, well-spoken, kind personality of yours :D :D ...

And wiped our asses ... yeah right  Lets just hope we meet in the tournament at some point, maybe even in the finals (if thats at all possible). Than you'll see yet again, what "Everybodys coming to the tournament and Germany wins" really means :D

Oh, I can swear like a trooper when provoked. :p

Keep provoking me and you'll get to know another side of me. A very EVIL side.

Anyway, we'll see. We really are just worried about the French right now.

Lou :rose:

Let's all just hope that this time around, like happened 4 years ago, both of you will be so entertained battling each other that you'll forget about Portugal and get your asses kicked. :D

I agree that this years song is fab, thank god we didn't end up with another version of Vindalo. I do have to say though that despite it being my national anthum God Save The Queen is one of the dulest I have ever heard. The lirics are ok but the music puts me to sleep.
I suport Billy conolly's campaign (Not a real one) to have something to the tune of the archers theme. much mor rousing and upbeat.

Yep, I gotta agree with you there! Our national anthem is the dullest of the dull. I didn't realise Billy Conolly was campaigning a for a new one. The Archer's Tune?! LOL!

Good on him! Love that man!

Wow, that's an awesome story. :) No wonder you love that song.
And your daughter will always remind you that Englishmen should always practice penalties.....

Lou - who loves Germans really (especially you).

That's just so sweet of you, back

But hey, you can be glad that Argentina does not belong to Europe. And I think England will win over germany this year....in terms of affairs because Beckham is a nod better at cheating on his wife than Oliver Kahn. ;)

Snoopy, loves picking on Englishmen and -women

Wow, I thought nothing would offend me, but slagging off Vindaloo is blasphemy of a very high order.

Lou has already explained that, other than sex, football is the best thing ever. Quite right. However, sex isn't possible when extremely drunk (for me, at least :( ) but watching football still is.

When I'm pissed (as I will be on Sunday) All together now is beyond me. The best footie songs aren't:

1. Vindaloo
2. England supporter's society (to the tune of that thing from the Italian Job)
3. Three Lions
4. We're on the march, the Tartan Army - even though its Scottish.

Message ends.

I guess I must be a masochist, cos I seem to lend myself to being picked on a lot. :D

Glad to see that logic has won the day! :p

Hiya Eros!

It's always good to hear from a kindred spirit.

I have to admit, I do love Vindaloo. It's just one of those songs that everyone can sing, no matter how pissed we all are. :D

In fact, I love all of your top three. I won't comment on the Tartan Army, but I can appreciate that you must feel a little awkward at times, and nothing else but that song will do. ;)

Observing Lou and Crazy Angel thumping chests at one another, I remember a story from the World Cup, must be 30 years ago now, when the Cup was held in England. England and Germany had made it to the finals.

A politician noted, "If, tomorrow, the Germans beat us at our national sport, we can comfort ourselves with the thought that twice in this century, we have beaten them at theirs."

I'm afraid National Football Songs all remind me of a downmarket version of the Eurovision Song Contest, thank God our US members are spared that fate!

Though Three Lions wasn't all bad. For preference I would have Swing Low adopted for sporting ventures, it is firmly hitched to Rugby Union, (a man's game not like that American Football nonsense), but I see no reason why it couldn't migrate to football.

On second thoughts, most of the words of Swing Low have too many syllables for the average football supporter.

NL ;)
