.. a deep, dark secret in their past. Why do you suppose that is so fascinating to people?

If they are totally immortal and without sin then we wouldn't relate to them.

Captain America doesn’t have one. Wonder Woman doesn’t have one.

Good point.

So I suppose it is knowing that they have flaws that is actually appealing. Or maybe it is just knowing their dirty little secret that is the draw.

Maybe not a dirty little secret, but they all must have some sort of weakness. Superman without the Kryptonite and the secret identity wouldn't have been as popular.

Captain America? Sure he does. His entire career as Captain America is built on a drug - the Super Soldier Serum - considering he stands for all the values of America and has often fought drug dealers and come out against drug use - that's no small thing.

Wonder Woman's deep dark secret - which most of America still refuses to acknowledge, is that she's a les bean.

holy lord god, what an avatar! *drool*

And I think it's because we see someone who is so strong and so good and works for the sake of other people, and the pathos of the situation that they've either suffered greatly in their past, or they've done something wrong and are trying so hard to work off their debt tweaks our heartstrings.. it makes them more human. The tragic hero has always been a popular role. Go back to ancient Greece, and they'll give you some great examples.

Refusing to sleep with you does not make me a lesbian.

Well, Wonder Woman is female and we are talking comic books so I guess that’s weakness enough.

I agree that Superman needs his secret identity. As one of the most powerful mortals in the DC universe, writers must firmly tie him to humanity to be interesting. Kryptonite has always seemed like more of a short cut, however. Instead of creating supervillains who were smart enough trick him or powerful enough to gang up on him, it’s easier for the writer to have Lex Luthor pull out a glowing rock and sic the security guards on Superman.

I think Marvel had the better idea: create less powerful superheroes with flaws in their personality. However, they have confused flaws with personality. Superheroes who beat their wives are no more accessible than those with powers far beyond those of mortal men.

No, she has weaknesses. She's not as powerful as Superman. She's not psychic or anything like that.

I caught part of an episode of the new Justice League. Can she really fly now? What's up with that?

Not that I'm a highly religious man, but what do you think the "great creator" had in mind with all of us? Do the greater flaws in us make us that more appealing, if we also have a side that is incredibly good?

She has weaknesses. She’s not as powerful as Superman, not as fast as the Flash, has no psychic abilities like MM. What she doesn’t have though is that one Great Weakness or Great Secret. You can’t whip out a rock, set her on fire, or remind her of how her parents tragically died. There are no shortcuts to taking away her powers or making her go nuts.

She has been flying for at least 20 years now. Hermes gave her the power.

Thanks for the tip about her flying. I don't keep up with DC much, or comics in general for that matter.

Most superheroes don't have a superweakness.

But how do you beat someone who's invincible?

There was an episode of "Lois & Clark" where the bad guys hid a nuclear bomb in an abandoned mine shaft and rigged a news report to say there were miners trapped in it. Superman tries to excavate it, sees the bomb, gets irradiated. So he couldn't be helpful to humans anymore.

Of course, he figured something out.

Because people are noisy snoops and are drawn to conflict and drama.

Sunstruck, what I really want to know is, if Dillinger refused to sleep with a woman, what would that make him? Hummmm...
