Excessive drinking over a period of years may lead to a condition known as Alcohol Dementia, which can cause problems with memory, learning and other cognitive skills.

Alcohol has a direct effect on brain cells, resulting in poor judgment, difficulty making decisions and lack of insight.

<snip>

Those suffering from dementia, may have very little ability to learn new things, while many of their other mental abilities are still highly functioning. Along with the decline in cognitive skills, sometimes noticeable personality changes take place.

<snip>

Another symptom is telling the same stories or asking the same questions over and over, with no recollection that the questions have just been asked and answered. In conversation they may repeat the same piece of information 20 times, remaining wholly unaware that they are repeating the same thing in absolutely stereotyped expression.

Remarkably, at the same time they can seem to be in complete possession of their faculties -- able to reason well, drawing correct deductions, makes witty remarks, or playing games that require mental skills, such as chess or cards.

Personality changes

•Frustration, Anger, and Irritability
•Emotional Lability, Unstable moods
•Paranoia, Suspicion, and Jealously
•Insensitivity to Others
•Flat Emotional Responses
•Loss of Inhibitions
•Fear of Being Alone

scary stuff.

Like we say it:

"If there is anybody, who drinks more
than a small beer everyday,this person
is an alcoholic."

Korsakoff's syndrome.

Scary, yet self-induced.

Then there's the old-fashioned wet brain lurking on the horizon.

Its an affliction that targets librulz and progressives and Democrats.

There will be some excessive drinking in the Bluegrass state today.

Wish I were there!

Sean. Interesting.

I get a kick out of teh "Sean is an alcoholic" meme here.

From what I've seen, Sean gets more than a bit bellicose when he's been drinking, and probably doesn't do himself any favors by posting here when he's inebriated.

It's not an everyday thing though.

Many years ago an old guy with Korsakoff's Psychosis usta call the hospital every nite after his wife left for work. His calls always came to Emergency Services and me. He seemed lucid for 15 minutes after which he had no memory of the conversation, and began repeating himself. Appeals to his wife failed, and we decided to end the call as soon as we recognized this caller. On one occasion the opertator called back to insult us for not helping the poor guy (he lived maybe 100 miles away). She had listened to the call.

there was a guy i was pretty damn sure had it, but it turned out to be a tumour instead. i guess it was fortunate that his dr was unaware of his drinking, because if he had know he might never have bothered with the scan.

i was unaware this condition even existed until a couple of years ago, which i find pretty bad. if cigarettes have to inform us of the cancer risk then why are the risks of excessive drinking not advertised too?
