It's Christmas Eve so it was time for my wife and I to hand out gifts and get ready for tomorrow.

We drive in to the hospital with a number of bags filled with wooden boxes. Each box is eight inches long by four inches wide and and inch and a half deep. Twenty five boxes in total with most of them having a name burned into it before it was varnished. Inside each box was a Stethescope. (Remember me telling about how I had been collecting the broken ones in work and repairing them?) I had enough stethescopes for each R.N. and Aide on my unit with a couple of extras.

These were all Littman's. Several Cardio II's and the rest were Classic IIe's. Not the old el cheapos you find in many stores. These are proffesional quality 'scopes. Each one had been cleaned and supplied with new parts to bring them back to "Like New Condition".

The Cardio's of course went to my favorite R.N.'s. (Hey I'm giving them away so I can chose who I give them to.)

So we get to my unit and I start handing the boxes out to the staff members who are working. The rest go into the bosses office to be given to people as they show up for work. (Yes I even gave the boss one.)

For the non medical staff on the unit I also had gifts. For the Housekeepers I had $50.00 gift cards to their favorite stores. For the Social Worker I had a combination Basket. A leather bound Note Book with her name embossed into it. A Pen and Pencil Set and two Day Spa tickets for "The Works".

I was feeling good as I handed these gifts out. I had put a lot of effort into them. Then the bitching started. People wanted to know why this was all they were getting. Some people were complaining about the gifts themselves, why did I think they would like something like this? I actually had one R.N. walk up to me and hand me the box back while telling me she didn't want a piece of shit gift like this from me or anyone else.

Well needless to say I was really feeling the holiday spirit. I turned around and left the unit without saying a word. (I knew better because I knew exactly what I wanted to say.)

Ahh well, it's the thought that counts.

Tomorrow I'll head up to my parents and enjoy my Christmas with them.

That's the sort of thing that makes you differentiate between co-workers and friends. I've tried to combine them but it hardly ever works. Pity . . .

Wow. I'm sorry. I have no use for a stethoscope and even I would have said thank you for the effort and the thought.

I would have probably passed it on to someone who needed it more, but I would have expressed my gratitude nonetheless and told the next person all about you and your efforts. People these days can be shitheads.

I hope your Christmas goes better.

"Work related" can be contentious. You, judging from so many of your posts, love your work, despite its frustrations. Others, it would seem, only do it for the pay.

Not seeing that, fits the picture I have of you...

Your thoughts really, really do count - and yet again, you put the thought into action.

Bless you.

Cat. You did good. I'm sorry that some people can't accept a gift that is given. You put time, effort and thought into your gifts. Those people did not even consider that.

I hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

Damn!

I would LOVE a stethoscope, even though I am not an nurse. And I would LOVE, even more, knowing that you had recovered it from a death sentence and brought it back to life.

A lot of my gifts this year are used or repurposed things. One of my 20-somethings was so happy and excited at the pair of tall boots we found that are exactly her size, she danced a jig in them. It felt good to be able to give her exactly what she wanted-- and what she wanted did not include "brand new"

I'm the kind that doesn't worry about where something comes from. (As long as it isn't hot.)

Some of the best/neatest gifts I have received have come from such places as Yard Sales and Flea Markets.

As for the 'scope let me see what I have left after the holdiays and you may get a late present. (I have already gifted out the ones returned to me this morning but we'll see if more come in. If not then you'll have to wait a bit until I make another.)

You know that, for every idiot brainwashed into the shopping mall mentality, there will be another who simply appreciates the better quality.

I mean-- would you rather have a new Toyota, or a vintage BMW?

In our family we brag about how little our gifts cost. Thrift shop finds or regifting is perfectly acceptable. My son emails me his list and writes at the bottom "Used is cool." It's not the price that counts at all.

I would have loved one of your boxes, even if it was empty. The gift inside would be the sprinkles.

Cat, What a thoughtful present. I'd be proud if you'd done that for me, needed or not.
