Some choices to start with:

Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald
Paradise by Toni Morrison
The House of Mirth By Edith Wharton
Second Honeymood by Joanna Trollope
Three Women by Marge Piercey

The only one of these I've read yet is Fall on Your Knees, and is actually a big reason I wanted to start some kind of discussion group. Logophile recommended I read this book, so I did, not knowing anything about it. If I'd known, I probably wouldn't have read it, honestly. I tend not to like dark books unless there's some particularly redeeming ending, and while there was a nice little ending to Fall on Your knees, it didn't nearly make up for all of the sadness throughout the book.
I do have to say, tho, that MacDonald is a helluva writer, very engaging with an unusual style. She brings you into the story and keeps you there, even when you want out. Which is why I finished it, even when I didn't want to.
The character growth in Kathleen and Frances was particularly striking; Kathleen's time in New York and her story with Rose could have been a book on its own, I think. Maybe that's what my problem with the book was- that the two characters with the most depth and heart were the characters who got the biggest shaft.

I'm very curious how others were affected by this book, but at the moment I've got no discussion questions. I'll try to think of something.

Oooo ooo! I vote for this one! It's next on my "to read" list, I have it sitting right here! :D

Well get to it then, so you can tell me what you think! :)

so this thread is to discuss ANY of those books?

I wonder if we should put "Spoiler" notes at the top of our posts before we start talking about a book... just in case someone hasn't read something on the list, but is planning to?

That was my worry and why I didn't reveal too much about Fall on Your knees. I'm totally clueless about the best way to do all this.

I just don't worry about "spoiling" a book. A book is an experience -- otherwise, why would we read again books we've already read?

The title says this is a discussion thread, so people coming here should realize books are being discussed. If they are being discussed, then you might just possibly be talking about what happened in the book ;)

If it makes you feel better, you can always type in large letters at the top of any post "POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR (name of book) HERE" and then skip a line or two and then start posting. Anyone who reads beyond that and then complains about being "spoiled", is, frankly, stupid and deserves to be ignored.

Enjoy your thread and your discussion, and let other people worry about themselves. You aren't doing anything wrong.

I need to read more, so as soon as I'm done with The Da Vinci Code I'm all in.

Unfortunately I have not heard of any of the original books on this list.

Da Vinci Code I did hear of and read. I won't comment on it though until Arienette has finished it.

Most of my reading deals with either religios or military history. (If I'm not reading for work that is.)

Aw, thanks. I appreciate that.
I'm almost done, have about a fourth of it to go and then you can talk about it all you want. :D
