Given:
* Natural compound found in fruit repairs DNA damage caused by aging and radiation.
* Anti-senescence drug gives aged mice more vitality and organ function and regrows hair,.

Next:
Rejuvenation treatments will blossom worldwide -- for those who can afford them. Will the treatment restore sexual vigor too? Will we be swarmed by sly young-looking oldsters who know exactly how to seduce naive youths? Have many stories of re-juvies appeared on LIT?

Sounds too good to be true, but it could have uses in space, et..
But it might also be useful in a Plot Bunny. ?

Nah, just eat more fiber.

Poor bastards. Why would you want to live for 150-200 years? I'm 54 and I'm fookin' TIRED.

Between the college kids who think because they're in college they MUST know it ALL, yet think Europe is a country and the Neighbors who claim that me flying the American flag in front of my home is offensive to people who aren't from this country yet would GLADLY steal that flag off the front of my home to stomp on and burn in the street in an act of protest thats SOLE INTENT AND PURPOSE is to OFFEND and the ignorant arrogant farktards who can't understand a simple concept like "in the best interest of ALL" because they are convinced the world really does revolve around them. They block roads and disrupt everyone's lives proclaiming their "RIGHTS" whilst trampling everyone else's. They DEMAND respect whilst BLATANTLY showing a complete and total disrespect for anyone who disagrees with them.

Why the FUCK would I want to even have another TEN years dealing with these spoiled fekkin' disrespectful, self-centered fekkin' MORONS?????

You think these aging cures are for the RICH?? Wow, are you fekkin' clueless? These snake oil claims are for the POOR who will give every penny they have just to live an extra 5 years and will rob anything and EVERYTHING to live another 20 even if it's behind bars.

And do you really think the medical community is serious;y researching this as a viable cure for aging? The pharmaceutical companies would NEVER back that. They don't want CURES. They want drugs that alleviate the symptoms of your ailment while creating half a dozen MORE symptoms that you need MORE drugs for and they want you in that cycle for LIFE.

But forget ALL that.

Let's look at a very simple truth:

The Earth currently has nearly 8 BILLION human inhabitants. Over the next 35-40 years that number will DOUBLE.

TWICE

We have food shortages, energy shortages, housing shortages, and dwindling resources RIGHT NOW.

Can you even BEGIN to imagine what it will be like with

32BILLION?

And you want to add to that by helping people live twice as long??

Good fookin' Luck with that.

Maybe this is a long shot, but I'm going to guess that "Walking on Sunshine" is not your personal theme song.

Actually, most projections are that world population will top out sometime this century at around 11-12 billion. Of course, that assumes people keep dying.

My theme song is Greg Allman- I'm No Angel.

I find those numbers VERY conservative.

And people WILL keep dying. If you ignore fatality by natural causes the number of people killed by distracted drivers (cell phones are leading cause) and murder by people intolerant of others different views (terrorists and violent protesters) but those numbers will never make up for the number of people having children for no other reason than being to stupid and/or lazy to use any sort of birth control

I'm not sure where you get your numbers. The UN estimates that world population will be somewhere around 11.2 billion by 2100. That's 73 years from now. That's an increase of less than 60%. I've never seen any projections that estimate population growth to 30 billion. The growth rate would have to increase over what it is now, and growth rates have been falling fast for over 30 years. Mathematically, there's no chance world population will get that big within the next 100 years.

No one knows what's going to happen in the future, but if we take the recent past as our guide there's no reason to worry about population growth. World population has doubled in the last 50 years or so, and human life on earth is better than ever: longer, better living conditions, less poverty, better health care, more freedom. World GDP is growing at about 3% a year, and if it keeps doing that the world will be 8 times richer than it is now in 2100, with a population less than twice as big.

So, as I said, nobody knows what's going to happen, but I can't figure out why anyone would want to be pessimistic. It doesn't seem like a good bet, to me.

Cheer up and pass the snake oil, I say!

If one is to be bitten, it should always be fun . . . and with maybe a bit of hair-pulling, rump slapping, and a lot of giggles.

Especially the giggles.
But if I must have blood drawn in the name of 'fun' then, Molly, you either use
magic to fix the damage or I'll ask Lori to repair the damage.
I'm allergic to pain.

Silicon Valley Would Rather Cure Death Than Make Life Worth Living

Some above have mentioned the tedium of longevity. Suppose you could live forever, or at least 200 years. Would you be overwhelmed by memory? Would you be bored because you've already done and seen everything of interest? Would your long life be worth living? Would a rejuvenated society see a massive rise in suicides? Would non-suicidal oldsters tend to dominate society financially, politically, sexually? Would the young be enslaved to the old and powerful?

If rejuvenation would restore organ functions, including gland functions, then the levels of hormones will rise to the levels of 20yo person. "Sexual Vigor" that you mention is nothing but a certain levels of chemistry throughout your body. There is a small psychological aspect, but not a very big one.

So yes, it will be restored. The other thing though - we will probably not live long enough to see that happening. Even if such tech would be developed before you die, in the first decades merely dozens of people will be able to afford that.

Also, on the topic of over-population. Either way, humanity will have to face that problem and think of ways on how to deal with it. I think that what we will end up with is a good old birth control policies that China only recently lifted - where the family has to pay increasing taxes and fines for any next child after the first one.

What you REALLY should be wary about though, is that most of that population growth comes not from Europeans or Americans - not from the developed and prosperous countries. Most families in US, CA, EU, AU, NZ, RU - have only one child. This means basically that only 1 new person comes out of 2 others. The population growth is thanks to Africa, India, Middle East and Asia. So when you imagine those 16 billion white people - think twice. In a few hundred years I wouldn't be surprised if white "European" and "Caucasian" archetypes will be nearly extinct or assimilated and mixed into African and Asian races.
Not saying it's bad, because it's not a violent extinction, but it makes me kind of edgy.:cattail:

My first story here was about a group of people who stumbled across a way to arrest aging permanently. They set up a little culture of their own, and changed sexuality so it was more intense but didn't produce children. They grew their little enclave, very slowly, by kidnapping. Last I checked they were still happily playing volleyball, having sex, and farming. Of course, they lived somewhere entirely divorced from Earth's many problems, and had a small but stable form of self-governing worked out.

I was writing deliberate utopia (and male utopia at that), but I don't think eternal life has to be dull. The thirst for constant novelty is a modern affliction, I think; we'd all look ADHD to people 500 years ago. In other words, subtract cultural conditioning and we all might be perfectly happy with a world that's well understood and isn't constantly changing. I still don't get tired of seeing sunsets and I've never seen two the same; I think if we knock off the culture-wide over-stimulation we'll find that there's enough natural variation in the world to keep us happy. Where I see unhappy old people, they're rarely bored; the problem is mostly the constraints of disease limiting them.

Check out my Second Chance series. The protagonist starts out as a 71 year old man who finds a way to reverse aging and build himself up.

I'll have what you're having.

Indian Prince tea?

I guess (hope) the main aim of this research is to battle cancer - DNA repair, stopping tumors - and aging defects; to improve life quality in general.

I have earned my age stripes. Every mark on my body, every ache and pain, has a story to it. Each one tells the tale of my survival. I don't think I want that taken away.

Especially the giggles.

Not into pain, either, dear--and certainly not into blood sports. I just think that if one is to be bitten, it should at least be fun.

Nezhul - if you're really from Russia then you should know that this was invented there and used by 'some people' there a long time ago. It was back then written up as 'succinic acid' and in the West they verged on it through the product commonly known as 'resveratrol.' But it also has biotin and other things in it.

If you are Russian and you know about this, then would also know two important things about it:

1. It has to be taken around FOURTEEN years earlier than the first time you will start to see any improvement in aging, and

2. er... It does work.

You do realize that the treatments will only be available to the ruling class. The masses will be born and die just like always.

Although a good plot line would be that it was close hold in a lower class and the storyline would be the lengths that the ruling class would go to to get at it on an individual basis and how the lower class used it to manipulate and/or deceive the ruling class.

Why are you addressing this to me? It's not like I was wondering about some product.
And no, I never heard of such stuff. The fact that I'm Russian doesn't mean I know everything that is developed in Russia or happens here. I don't even watch the news, because it's all about someone dieing - that's the thing that our news makers find the most interesting to report.:cattail:

You're exaggerating (again). As of 2016, New Zealand had a total fertility rate[/quote] of 2.03, meaning that at current birth rates an average woman can expect to have 2.03 children in her lifetime - i.e. even without migration, NZ's population would be slowly increasing. (Basically, if you can ignore migration and childhood mortality, 2.00 = replacement rate.)

For the other places you mention, TFR is approximately: USA 1.87, Australia 1.77, Russia 1.61, Canada 1.60. Within the EU it varies a lot, from 2.01 for France down to 1.23 for Portugal. The EU average is 1.58; that's well below replacement rate, roughly level with China, but still well above "1 new person per 2".

This bit is correct; those populations are growing relative to Europe/USA/etc. But you're rather exaggerating the discrepancy.

So when you imagine those 16 billion white people - think twice. In a few hundred years I wouldn't be surprised if white "European" and "Caucasian" archetypes will be nearly extinct or assimilated and mixed into African and Asian races.

In a few hundred years, every person alive today will be "extinct" and the world will be full of brand-new people. (Unless we really screw it up and wipe out the species altogether.) Mixing your genes with somebody else's is the closest you get to genetic immortality, and that works just as well regardless of whether the person you're mixing with has the same skin colour.

Wow, Bramblethorn is so smart! He even knows how to google the exact numbers and statistics, and that makes his points so much more credible!

Even though it doesn't change the original point. Still, he gets to prove that he's smarter than those who don't see a point in doing the wiki research to make a point that European population is decreasing.

Also, Your numbers are total values. There are a lot of immigrants in Europe and US who, while having a totally valid citizenship, remain true to the traditions and culture of their country of origin. If you look up the birthrate of actual white Brits (no racism there, but how else you describe them?) in Britain - you will find that it's probably lower than the birthrate in Britain in general. Same probably goes for every other country.

Now run along, google some numbers to prove me wrong! Waste your time on the useless research that doesn't change the point in the least for the sake of coming along smart on the forums.:cattail:

every person alive today will be "extinct"
A man who doesn't know the difference between "dead" and "extinct".
A person can't go extinct. A species can, or, in the terms of humanity - a race = subspecies.
Oh, but I can see you used quotes, that let you wriggle out of this one, but at the same time make your original sentence lack sense. Good job!

Oh, I'm not claiming it takes any great smarts to do a quick search and check one's facts before posting. I think almost everybody on this forum knows how to do that, if they're the sort of person who prefers to tell the truth instead of just making things up.

In my experience, not-racist people don't spend a lot of time fretting about what the skin-colour balance of Earth might be several hundred years from now.

I'm white, of English/Irish ancestry with a little bit of Scottish and Germanity. Ethnically speaking, my friends encompass Black, Arabic, Desi, Japanese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, American First Nations, Australian First Nations, Māori, and others... and I have plenty in common with them. Much more so than I do with certain of my white compatriots, or indeed with you. So why on earth should I be concerned if the world population becomes a bit less white over the next few hundred years?
