Miss the glory days of role-playing games? Back before Third Edition and half-vampires and a billion and one mods and feats and whatnot? Back when a first-level character could fit on a single torn-out sheet of spiral-bound notebook paper--with room to spare? When the world was a blank sheet of paper for your character to write on with sword, mace, bow and spell? When life hung in the balance of a single toss of a twenty-sided die?

Or if you were born after 1975, you probably missed out on the early days of Dungeons and Dragons, when adventures were raw and uncut, and Dungeon Masters put real time and effort into designing worlds rather than bearing the overhead burden of cumbersome RPG systems.

Whether you missed out on or just miss old-school gaming, now is your chance to experience classical Dungeons and Dragons in a realistic, raw and (of course) sexually explicit campaign.

Characters are all normal first-level humanoids. All alignments are acceptable (characters may or may not adventure as a team). Evil characters will be full-fledged characters, able to gain experience, solve mysteries, find treasure, and fulfill personal goals just like good characters; in other words, the evil characters are not there merely to provide foils for the good characters.

Acceptable races include dwarves, elves, humans, orcs, ogres, lizard-men and gnolls. Other races may be admitted on request. Supernatural races (like vampires or werewolves) or hybrids thereof will be denied. Classes that are allowed include fighter, cleric, rogue, wizard, paladin (or antipaladin for evil deities), ranger. Custom classes will be considered.

The story begins in a frontier town on the fringes of a declining empire. By day, the town is fairly safe. But as the day draws near its end and the shadows grow long, livestock are put in, and citizens prepare nervously. After the sun goes down, the city gates are locked. Farmstead doors are bolted shut, and women are secured inside...for there are humanoids and fell beasts who will gladly take and use any found outside. And there are monstrous births born of such unholy unions which are seldom discussed...

Post your character concepts in this thread.

Character Creation

Ability scores will be handled on a point-buy basis. You begin with 80 points. Any score up to 14 can be bought on a point-for-point basis. A 15 costs 16 points, a 16 costs 18, a 17 costs 20, and an 18 costs 23. This is to place a premium on high scores (under the 3d6 die-tossing system, a 16 was far less likely an outcome than a 12, but more common than an 18, which was truly rare).

Spells will be handled on a case by case basis. Most wizards can choose two first-level spells. I will randomly select three others for the wizard's grimoire There is a 20% chance the wizard will also start with a second-level spell (though be unable to cast it, of course).

Starting equipment will be purchased for the prices listed in the Player's Handbook. Because the area the characters begin in is rural, food and rations are 20% below listed price. Bows and arrows are 10% below listed price, as are horses. Metal armor, however, comes at a 10% premium, with plate mail being 20% above list price (which is to say, first-level characters won't be starting in plate mail!).

Other starting goodies: Every character will begin with a minor special item. Examples include a masterwork (+1, nonmagical) knife, a fine leather grimoire cover, etc. Each character has a 20% chance of starting with one minor magical item of my choosng. Your character also starts with two traits. More on that when the time comes..

I would be highly interested in joining this if you wouldn't mind but I don't have the players hand book anymore or any of the other DD book I once had. I can come up with a rough idea if you like as to what I want to create. I generally like the elven femal archer or ranger as I hate playing level one magic users.

That's fine and dandy...most of it I'm sure you remember, so you can come up with a character that's "close enough for government work," as the saying goes. I can consult my books to help you dot the i's and cross the t's.

What do you hate about first-level MUs?

They are to weak and takes to long to build them up for spells and such or at least the DM I had made it hard one. I will have something together in a bit for a character. :)

It depends...for dungeon crawls (games focusing primarily on combat), yes, first-level MUs are weak. This is not going to be a dungeon crawl. Wit and intelligent play count at least as much as skill with the sword and bow. Hint: characters/players who think the answer to every situation is kicking ass don't last very long in my world.

Level: 1

ST: 15

Quirks:

SCRAPPER: Janonna has a rather un-elfin knack for brawls, having been brought up in less than ideal circumstances. +1 to hit and +1 on damage in unarmed combat. +2 against orcs and goblinoids.

EVADER: Sometimes the best way to overcome an enemy is to just not be there when he shows up. +10% to chances to pass without a trace, +10% to sprinting speed.

Description: She had soft wavy blondish-white hair braided to her ass. Her dark tan skin helps to bring out her light blue eyes that are kind looking. As with all Elves she has that enchanting beauty that captures a lot of men's attention and uses it to her advantage when the need arises.

Can tell the items she wears are hand me downs from other family members so they don't have to spend money on her. A well worn brown leather waist pouch around her waist.

Money: 71 gp / 6 sp

History: She is the youngest of five children but she hasn't seen any of her 3 older brothers or her sister since she had gone to live with her mother's kin. Her father Frugretor Silentread had married her mother Daronna Darksbane Silentread but were both killed when she was young. Not having a choice she was taken by her mothers family the Darksbane's which caused problems with her father's side of the family the Silentread's. She doesnt like the Darksbane family and is unhappy being with them. The feud between the two has left her caught between the two and she is looking for a quick way out from the middle of them.

Count me in as a thief (I'd like to play a halfling - if you don't think the... logistics will be too difficult)

A couple of questions though:

1. Do we get the racial modifiers?
2. What is our starting money?

I will probably jump in as a either a Cleric of a nature deity, or, if allowed, a Druid. I had been considering a Ranger, but Mistress of pai beat me to it (Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!), and I hate doubling up on a character types. Spellcaster works well, and I can just see some big ol' corn-fed farm boy type here, or perhaps that racial subtype you and I had discussed, OB! (big cheezy grin)

Oh, and if any of you have questions about something in the books, I have pretty much everything up to third ed.

If there's a last spot open, I'd be willing to enter as a magic user or a bard.

Question on the ability scores.... If I have a dex of 13 and want to raise it to a 14 would it cost one point from the 80 or 14 points from the 80 to raise it?

A 14 costs 14. So if you began with Strength, and picked a 14, you would have 66 points left.

Yes...and the racial mods are applied after the point buy. In other words, you "buy" your ability scores and then any racial mods are applied.

Starting cash...I'm going to say everyone gets a flat 120gp, unless specified otherwise for your character.

Any More Takers?

We're going to get underway in a few days here...if anyone else wants to join, now would be an excellent time. An evil character or two would be nice, for some variety.

Am I the only one to have a character up or what? Where are the others at? :) I have no idea what the weapon would cost. Just want a short bow with arrows and if posible leather shirt.

No - you're not the only one - I've just submitted my character to him for approval before I post it -

As for costs - a long bow is usually 75 gp, & arrows are 3 silver pieces per 6 - so, with the discount a bow & 24 arrows will be 69 gold, 6 silver and 6 copper

(There are 10 silver pieces per gold and 10 copper pieces to a silver)

But you may want to re-think what you need. I'm not sure if he's a "if you don't have it, you don't have it nazi" but this is the list I've sent him:

2 Daggers, 2 Wrist sheaths, 6 Darts, 2 Tunics, 2 pair of Breeches, 1 Girdle, 1 Belt, 4 Small belt pouches, 1 Good Cloth Cloak, 2 pair of Gloves, 1 sewing needle,

A Backpack packed with my bed roll, 2 bars of soap, 1 week’s dry rations, 10 Candles, 2 Fishhooks, Flint and Steel and my thieving equipment which consists of 1 set of thieves picks, (if possible – this is the item I’d like to have as “special”), 1 set of Crampons, 50' of silk rope (had to have silk, it's lighter) , 1 Grappling Hook, 15 Pitons, 1 hammer (not in the book – put it down as 1 gold), 3 pieces of chalk, 1 Map Case (empty), 1 Small metal mirror, a Hacksaw with 2 Hacksaw blades, a Metal file, a Crowbar, Wire cutters, 2 bags of Marbles (30 in each), and 2 Small sacks (you never know when you’ll need a sack) Which will leave me with 27 gold, 2 silver & 8 copper

So a short bow should cost less then right? Given her background and her family not willing to give her much so she cant go far she wouldn't have much of anything anyway. So what about a dagger, a back pack with a bed roll, 1 bar of soap, 1 weeks dry ration, flint and steel, 1 small sack, the cheapest bow and 24 arrows, 1 used brown leather waist pouch.

God I hate not having my books or I would have had everything figured out much sooner. Does that sound much better? I'm glad i'm not the only one to have something up. :) I apreciate the help. It has been a long while since I have played like this.

I'm here too, just waiting for approval! :D

I have the 2nd Ed Players Handbook on PDF, and could try getting it to you if you would like. Not sure of load perameters though... might be too big.

Incidentally, the book lists a Short Bow for 30gp, and a Composite Short Bow for 75gp. Trust me, weapons is where I spent the majority of my cash as well!

Anything else I can price for ya?

Oh, just a word on ages... Elves usually don't leave their community before they turn 100, thats about like an 18 year old human in relative terms...

How about the dagger, a back pack with a bed roll, 1 bar of soap, 1 weeks dry ration, flint and steel, 1 small sack, 1 used brown leather waist pouch? What are the cost on those items if you don't mind?

My Email is dragnm69@yahoo.com if you like to try and send it that way to me and thanks for the help. :)

Dagger [2gp], Back Pack [2gp], Bed Roll [unlisted, we've always used 1gp standard], 1 bar of soap [5sp/pound], 1 weeks dry rations [10gp], flint and steel [5sp], 1 small sack [5sp], 1 used brown leather waist pouch [7sp]. Total cost of 17gp 2sp.

There ya go!

Tried to send the PDF, but it's just too damned big! (64.4 Megs) I also tried copying it to word and sending it that way, but it won't copy completely, and I don't really wanna spend the next ten days or so proofreading and filling things in. Sorry...

I'll be happy to look up whatever you want though, I've got pretty much everything! lol

Ok what about the nonweapon proficencies and weapon proficincys not sure what the point value is for what I have put down already or if I can still do more with either one or to much on the nonweapons? Might rethink the nonweapons prof in a few. :)

Nonweapon Prof: Etiquet, cooking, hunting, tracking

Weapon Prof: Short bow

Nonweapon Prof: Etiquet, cooking, hunting, tracking

Weapon Prof: Short bow

Beginning warriors are alotted 4 weapons proficiency slots, and 3 non-weapons slots, gaining a new one every additional 3 levels. So at this point, you would have three Weapons slot left. As for Non-weaps, Etiquette, Cooking, and Hunting are all 1 slot each. Tracking is normally 2, but as a Ranger you get it for free, so no worries! :D

Oh! Don't forget the Ranger ability to fight with two weapons at no penalty!

Anything else that you can think of that I might have overlooked or forgotten about that I might need to have? The help is greatly apreciated. :)
