Tears worked their way slowly down Pierrette’s face, drawing lines in the white clown paint and blush that adorned her cheeks as she sat upon the roof of the “Dark Desires” tour bus. Seeing Pierrette cry, or even seeing her without a smile was something extremely rare, which is why she chose to be alone in this moment. The sky was brightening from blue to purple as the sun neared the horizon.
Sunrises always made Pierrette sad, the colors, the light, the beauty all of these things that signaled the approach of daybreak, yet another day she would not witness. Pierrette often wondered how that golden sunlight that seemed to wink at her from the horizon would feel upon her skin, or how bright it would shine at its zenith. These were all things she would never truly know.
As the sky continued its color shift into a brilliant red, Pierrette’s own brilliant red hair began to go gray at the roots. The long flowing pigtails began their slow ascent up her back. Teardrops fell onto the roof of the bus between her crossed legs when she bowed her head.
It was happening again, her transformation into this stranger she would never meet. She knew some things of him through the books that he kept for the circus; she also knew just how he wanted to wake up. Pierrette scanned her slight body which was swimming in the large vinyl outfit he wore, she hated having to dress him but knew that if she didn’t allow him to wake up fully dressed and ready to perform she would likely wake up alone in some dark place, or plummeting from a cliff into an icy lake.
Pierrette’s glittering blue eyes scanned the tent and animal trailer which had been readied by Alex and Brandon. The “Dark Desires Carnivale” was ready for its next Daylight Showcase.
A slight sniffle escaped Pierrette as her eyes narrowed and the sunlight hit her face, allowing her to feel its warmth for just a moment before the transformation was complete.
The cute and delightful face of Pierrette was replaced by Pierrot’s cocky scheming smirk. He yawned slightly and stretched the well defined landscape of muscles on his back. The wetness on his cheek startled him slightly as a light breeze fell across his face. Lifting a slender finger he lifted one of Pierrette’s dainty teardrops from his face to inspect.
“Moody bitch.” He sneered as he took his feet and skillfully back-flipped from the bus onto the loose red dirt of this carnival ground.
Where were they now?
Pierrot processed their schedule quickly through his silver head.
Yesterday was San Antonio… Last night must have been Austin… Dallas! They were in Dallas; it was going to be a big gate today. The show needed to be razor sharp, no surprises. Everyone knew their routines, he only had to worry about David adding his own “flair” to the bits they had rehearsed.
Pierrot rapped his fist on each window loudly as he made his way down the side of the bus.
“Wake up, wake up! Morning Dress Rehearsal in five! Rehearsal in five!” Pierrot’s French accent was almost completely gone by now, though he’d sometimes play it up just to score tail or milk the audience. “Get your asses out here! Let’s see what kind of show we got!”
Pierrot stepped through the door of the long black bus, walking against the flow of groggy performers who were on their way out to begin practice. Pierrot grabbed his trusty log book where he kept track of all the business matters regarding their little “dog-and-pony” show. He also stole a few moments to paint over his face again with his own design rather than Pierrette’s boring “blush” design.
246 pre-sold tickets!
It was definitely going to be a huge gate today.
Pierrot’s red and silver boots created small clouds as he hopped down into the loose red dirt. He flipped through his book to the page where he kept track of performance order.
“Alright, let’s get this over and done with so we can have some time to unwind before this afternoon.” Pierrot was very much the field general as he joined the crowd of artists headed for the large black and red tent. “As always we start with the brief… and I do mean BRIEF individual introduction segments followed by the “Wildlife Parade”. Alexandra, Emily, what have you got for me?”
